Thanks! This is an incredible price for this mic.
I'm a live audio engineer by profession, and I'm familiar with evaluating function and cost of mics..
If you're looking for a general purpose condenser mic in this price range, you'd be hard pressed to find equivalent sound quality, and probably impossible to find equivalent build quality, at this price. Audio Technica has an excellent reputation and track record, and this is about the price I'd expect to see on a used AT2020.

The step-up model, AT2035, is currently $120, is a significantly better mic, also at a very good price.

Thanks. Is this mainly for vocals or does it have good sound for acoustic guitars?
how does it compare to Shure PGA48 which also seems to be on sale and comes with accessories

The AT2020 is a general purpose mic, without a heavily tailored frequency response-- it is good for both vocals and acoustic instruments. It's frequently suggested as the best inexpensive mic for beginner home studio use.
The PGA48 is a dynamic handheld vocal mic-- an entirely different beast. By comparison, the AT2020 will be far more neutral, and do well on far more applications-- making it a better choice for recording, podcasts, etc. As a condenser, it also requires 48V 'phantom' power from a mixer, preamp, interface, or a stand-alone phantom power box, and for practical purposes it cannot be handheld..
If your need is for a vocal mic, especially handheld, for live performance, the PGA48 works fine.

Shure has got a big sale going on Amazon right now too. Anything better for the money from Shure right now for voice recording? Primary purpose is singing (occasionally live) with some speaking/podcast stuff once in a while. I do have an interface, so the 48v is not an issue.

Thanks for all your helpful comments so far, and Happy Thanksgiving !

Will this work on a PC or is it better to get the USB version? Thank you.

I've heard that the condenser microphones pick up a lot of background noise. Any idea how this performs? I'm trying to buy a gift for somebody who is trying starting "remote" vocal lessons. I was looking at the USB version of this.

I was also looking at the dynamic mics from Audio Technica AT2005 USB or ATR2100x USB. Would you have a recommendation among these? Would this be better?

The AT2035 I bought for $99 from another posted deal had just arrived. Do you think it's worth the $40 difference over the AT2020? It would mainly be used for streaming and possibly vocal recording.

It depends on the room you're in. What makes them so clear and open sounding is what makes them sensitive to what type of environment they're in and why a lot of podcasters/streamers prefer dynamic mics which have better off-axis rejection and lower signal levels which reduce room effects. (The EV RE20 and Shure SM7B are pro-level mics, but due to their low level often need a line booster to amplify the signal before they hit the mixer or interface. The Shure SM58 is THE standard vocal mic.)

I've got AT2020 and AT2035 mics that I used for my podcast and when I went to a guest's home to tape an interview, it was so live and echoey that I had a brutal time in post gating out the reflections. I did it, but it was a rough process. I used to record my podcast in my co-host's basement and the walls were far enough away and he had an open joist ceiling and that knocked down the ambient echo. The only real problems were the furnace/AC (which I used to use an expander on until we realized turning the damn thing off was easier).

You will need an interface (like a Scarlet Solo) to connect this to a computer. I started off my podcast with the USB version of this (AT2020USB) because that's what the Scriptnotes podcast hosts initially used and I was able to run two of them into my MacBook Pro then my Windows laptop, but I started running into an issue where this really horrible audio garbling would occur after long recording periods. (We were a very longform gabfast show where we'd go 45 minutes w/o a break.) It wouldn't record into REAPER, but made it impossible to continue.

Audio-Technica support didn't seem to think there was any problem with the mics (of course they wouldn't) and it was hard to test and reproduce because it'd take at least 20 minutes to manifest itself, so I was never able to pin down whether there was a problem with the circuitry in the mic or some sort of driver flakiness.

I decided at that point to invest in an interface and standard mics and got a Scarlet 18i8 (which has four mic preamps), a pair of AT2035 and an AT2020 guest mic to have guests in and they worked without issue for the rest of the show's run.

If all you need is a single mic for streaming/podcasting, then you'll probably be fine with the AT2020USB. Just sharing my experience with them, which may not have been the mic's fault.

I've got a pair of AT2035s and an AT2020 that I used for podcasting and they were terrific. Really punch above their weight in sound quality if you properly handle room liveliness and mixing.

If your budget is OK with the extra $40, the AT2035 is definitely worth the extra cost. The AT2020 is an excellent budget mic, and you'll replace it eventually if you grow your commitment to recording beyond typical podcasting. The AT2035 is a 'keeper' that will always be worth having as an option, even if you eventually move to a different primary mic.

How is this compared to a rode nt1 or nt1-a for recording acoustic guitar?
