I got this one for christmas last year when Walmart had this sale. I think it reached 400 in price, but I could be wrong on that.
I had the same debate.
Heres my take.
For this price, its insanely good.
You can replace this gasket with the newer style gasket once this one wears out. They all will wear out eventually but the grill itself is almost forever.
The air lift is no big deal to me. I'm 6'3 250, and yea I can feel its a ceramic grill lid, but I never go, man I wish this lid was lighter. It is what it is. doesn't bother me. Now, my mom whos 78 and has health issues cant raise my grill lid. Thats ok, she doesn't ever need to.
The wheel top as I'm told, can also be replaced, with the newer style, but I don't see a reason to do so.
The wire frame cart is sturdy stable and fine. E ventually i'm gonna build in an outdoor kitchen table and move the ceramic grill into that. Just a preference, nothing wrong with the cart its in.
For the savings, its a killer deal for this series, and its beautiful!
I bought a cheap wire basket from amazon that I can put coals in, with a splitter in the middle in case I only want coal on one side. I'd def go fort his vs 2-4X the cost in a newer model.
I just did a 14 lb practice turkey on Saturday (we went elsewhere for thanksgiving and we wanted some proper flavorful leftover turkey to chow on), because come christmas I'm doing a 26 lb turkey in this thing!
I got one. I've been waiting for a decent price and this is good enough. Not waiting to find a unicorn clearance deal. This will be paired with my Weber Smokefire Pellet grill and used for burgers/steaks/pizza type cooks. Thanks for posting.
Any users can attest to difference between series 1,2 and 3? This appears to be series 1. While series 3 is $2k!

Airlift hinge, better gasket, and it comes with a slow roller. It also comes with a much nicer basket instead of a iron plate with holes that the charcoal sits on. Oh and the stand is nicer. That's pretty much the differences between the 1 and 3.
EDIT: Forgot about the control tower top instead of the daisy wheel.
Great response. Thx! In your opinion stick with series one at this price or worth watching out for a series 3 deal?

i got mine last year on the 399 deal as well. I replaced the daisy wheel top with the one from smoke-ware, primarily to keep rain from getting in the top. the smoke-ware one also holds your vent setting for when you are opening and closing the lid. I've heard mixed reviews on the kamadojoe kontrol tower top, so that's why i went with the smoke-ware one instead.

Yea, true, the daisy top does slide when you open the lid. So maybe I'll switch tops one day. Its a minor thing for me. The $400 price is NOT a minor thing. That was killer good.
I keep a cover on mine anyway, so no worries on rain. Furthermore, I'm getting ready to rebuild my deck bigger, and I think I'm gonna build it sort of with a gazebo roof over (no walls, as a I have a great screen porch right beside it that I use), and then make it an outside kitchen sort of space so again, I can then leave it Not covered, and no worries of rain.
I also got one of these during last years deal and am thoroughly happy. All the stuff from the 2-3 is mostly just slight convenience and tweaks tbh. This will get the job done well once you learn it. Its a lot of fun getting to know the kamado style of cooking. The kick ash basket is one upgrade I would recommend after you get it, other than that maybe a cheap cover is all.

For first smoker this or the traegger 780? Just got from Walmart I think pellet would be easier for begginers right?
Pellet might be easier since it's main advantage is just setting the temp where you want it and you don't have to babysit. However, Komodo style cookers are probably the next easiest and the best in my opinion. I have a BGE medium that was given to me, wish it was a bit bigger but it's a champ for smoking whatever fits (just smoked a whole 13lb turkey) - and its from the late 90's so they last forever. Komodo's can be used in the cold since the ceramic holds temp. They use very little lump - so very efficient and doesn't require as much fire tending as side "stick" burner smokers. almost no tending once you get the hang of it - maybe just adjusting the air vents. I can smoke for 12hrs+ without adding any lump. They hold moisture better than metal. You can also smoke with whatever wood you can find and are not limited to just the pellets you can find. You won't be a beginner long - easiest things to start smoking are baby back ribs and bone in pork butt - both are forgiving and good for learning.
However, I think the one thing missing from this deal is the indirect smoking ceramic plate. I think that's a requirement for komodo smoking.
How much more time would I need to heat this up vs the Traeger?
Is the fuel cheaper than the traeger?
I mostly cooks steaks and would like to do pizza so probably this?
I dont have a traegar, so I don't know. I've seen one used a couple times. For me personally, using proprietary pellets, and to plug it into electricity, just doesn't feel like grilling to me. I have a blackstone I use for quick cooks and I use it a lot.
However, I can say, this kamado, get a pizza stone, and it can get to 750-800 F and cook pizza like a brick oven.
use a low grate, and a high one with cermaic deflector, and you can hot seer a steak at the coals and then move to the other side, and bring up the internal temp to where you like. I dont know if you can do that with a traegar.
With this kamado, and my blackstone, I don't have a desire for any other grille or smoker personally. Choose at your own risk.

I have 4 types of grills, smoker is usually my first choice. Egg style is more flexible, you can get it hot, keep it cold, keep smoke in, or have it airy, and you can start one way and finish a different way. But boy, it is a bunch of work.

Great feedback and insight. I picked up the $399 Walmart deal last year (I think it actually went down to $350 at one point and I got a $50 pricematch on that) + additional cashback to sweeten the deal. I *love* mine. All the add-ons/accessories are just commodities that are unnecessary to produce really high quality food. I'm 5'5 with a bum left wrist and lifting the grill lid really isn't bad for me either. The wheel top works just fine for me and I do plan to replace the gasket at some point once it fully wears out. I have no issues with the wire frame either. I bought a knock-off "OnlyFire" ash basket (vs the Kick Ash or official KJ ash baskets) and it works fine for me... which basket did you get btw? I removed the flat cast iron plate as well because ash will plug the holes up and cause issues with airflow. The ash basket works great for me.
I smoked my first 13-14~ [trimmed] brisket overnight on the 23rd-24th using the Thermoworks Smoke X4 + Billows and the double-indirect method (look this up on youtube via Smoking Dad BBQ... instead of the sloroller, I bought another set of deflector plates and a pizza tray to catch the drippings) and it turned out really great. The Billows really takes the guesswork out of it and makes temp control super easy.
I probably smoked it for 13-14 hours or so at temps ranging between 230-250F (I kept adjusting the temps myself but kept it within the zone... didn't need but am OCD when it comes to long cooks hahaha). Smoked over B&B oak charcoal + several chunks of post oak. I boiled down beef tallow with the fat trimmings before this. I also did a couple smaller pork bellies after the brisket but had to pull those because the fire was dying down. I think I lit a pretty full basket of coals probably around 3-4pm on the 23rd and 99% was burned out by around 1-2pm on the 24th. This is like 22~ hours of burn time, where I didn't add any more fuel, which is pretty insane... actually, I did add a small chunk of apple or cherry wood into the ash basket before popping the pork bellies on so I guess that kind of counts hahaha.
I'm planning to do a reverse sear tri tip later today. And may consider doing a prime rib on it for Christmas as well. Not a huge fan of turkey but I've also never had smoked turkey either

Cooking in Colorado it's probably better to have a Komodo for the winter?
