Target has the EcoTank ET-2803 for sale at 229.99 (normally 279.99), with an additional $30 gift card bonus with purchase. Online only.
Found this after I saw a separate sale for the ET-2400 for sale at $179.99. Despite the $50 difference in price, with the additional gift card, there's only a $20 net difference (+ the additional $1.50 off from the RedCard 5%). The two models are largely the same, the 2800 series is older and the 2400 is new this year, with the only difference being the availability of a display screen on the 2800 series for managing various settings, which may be handy to have.
The EcoTank series is compatible with sublimation printing with some simple conversion steps (not Epson approved, so probably not compatible with the warranty). The one "limitation" here is the print size, as a large format printer would allow for bigger projects, but this would be great for getting started. Easy to find guides online and sublimation ink for the Epson series.
There's been some previous threads regarding the replacement ink maintenance pad—when these printers reach "end of life" with the purge pad inside, the software will lock the printer from further use—this is also fixable without shipping and shelling out to Epson, steps can be found if you Google search ways to reset the counter and then the pads themselves are purchasable through eBay and other sources—from some brief investigation, the pad on the 2800 series seems virtually identical to the 2700 series (the previous iteration).

So many issues with clogged nozzles/print heads on all the Canon, HP, Epson inkjets I owned over the years.
I still have 2 inkjets in the garage waiting for the e-waste pile. If I MUST own a printer, Brother laser from here on out.

I also have a black and white laser printer from Brother that has been going strong since 2013. I paid $150 for this one.

I liked this printer so much, I bought the ET-4800 which is fine - smaller tanks and no duplex option, but good overall.
If not can you recommend one that won't break the bank on refilling?
My gf and kid wanting to get in to photography as a hobby, looking for a refillable printer.
These are still designed to fail.
Well I have had mine for 2 years and rarely ever use it but when I need to it is always ready to rock and roll with zero issues. I have a different model but it's absolutely amazing and so much more economical
