It's been the same price at Lowe's every time I've gone in there for the past six+ months.

If you don't need a dual bevel or sliding miter saw, it's a great saw for the money. The Dewalt carbide blade it comes with is great for rough cuts. Pair that with a Diablo ~80 tooth carbide blade for when you need clean cuts and you'll have a very versatile and capable machine.
Sliding function: since this wasn't answered yet- the sliding function gives greater max. board capacity (only worth it if you need it). This saw can cup up to 2x8" @ 90 deg and 2x6" at 45deg. The 12in sliding can cut up to 2x16" @ 90 and 2x12" @45.
For miter saws the best advice is only buy what you need. Most homeowners can get by with a 10" non-sliding Metabo/Ryobi, etc. that go on sale for $89 or $99. 12" saws are bigger and heavier, in addition to the previously mentioned blade expense. Within a given price range sliding tends to make the saw less precise. Just use a circular saw when you have to cut larger boards. Save the money to invest a decent miter saw stand or other tools.

It has been that price back and forth from Lowe's and at one point came with a free stand

New home owner here: what's the advantage of the sliding function?

I'm going to add baseboard trimming and make a garage tool bench, do I need sliding function?

It's really hard to find the $399 double bevel sliding saw with stand nearby. I'm thinking if I can just get this non sliding saw instead.

Wider cuts. I'd say you probably don't need it? I'll let others weigh in. I think the stand (I got it free) was super helpful though.

I inherited an uncles house after he passed this summer, but it needs a total renovation - built in the 70's, purchased by him in the 90's and never renovated. He also was a single guy who was a bit of a hoarder and never bothered to clean...anything...

So i'm going through room by room, been using this saw for 3-4 days now and I love it. Granted I was using a 30 year old makita with a fat dull blade, so this thing feels like a sports car

Has been great for quick cuts and doing baseboard

For this use case, even this saw is an overkill, let alone one with a sliding function. Sliding helps cut wider boards but for regular baseboard trims even a tiny cordless ryobi 7 1/4 inch saw would work.

This will work fine. For baseboards they will have to go both ways on the saw if you don't have double bevel. It can get a little weird having boards hanging off both sides of the saw by 11+ feet. But definitely doable. Finished my entire basement including baseboards with this saw.

Buy couple and just sharpen them. Acme charges $20 for the service.
