As far as I'm aware, that has to be one of the best deals for a new HD 800 S. Even on ebay used it's hard to find them anywhere below that price.
This should be front page.

Sponsored as in the retailer (Adorama) has a deal with Slickdeals to advertise the sale. Whether that means Slickdeals gets a fee up front or a percentage of whatever, it is higher up in "deals" so that it gets more clicks. In this case, you can only get the special pricing through this deal link which presumably gives Slickdeals credit for the sale.

This $1800 Sennheiser HD800S doesn't allow you to hear secrets of the universe but my $6000 Hifiman Susvaras do. Jokes aside, great price on the HD800S, best gaming headphones you can get for sure due to the soundstage. Secrets of the universe no, footsteps in an FPS, YES!
The S over the closed-back for gaming?

Simply put -the 800S is one of the most incredible headphones you can buy. You need a good dac/amp to get the most out of them but if you have the equipment and can afford them you won't be disappointed.
Any dac/amp recommendations that pair well with these?

Sennheiser headphones got bought out and support totally changed. I have these and the cable started having issues (it's like a 300$ proprietary cable). Took them almost 7 months to replace it and ultimately they gave me a used one cause new were still not available. Headphone quality is amazing but for this price point the support service was disgraceful. Would not buy from them again

This is seriously tempting me to upgrade, but my Sennheiser HD 650s are still such an amazing set of headphones that I'm hesitant to retire them just yet.

Anyone else in the same situation?

I was actually wondering what makes these or any headphones worth this much. I am curious, not trying to troll.
This is the world of audio. It is king of diminishing returns. These headphones do sound really good. The 800S is great but it doesn't sound $1000 better than say the 6XX or 58X. It is better and has great soundstage but with audio as you go up in price you only go up slightly in quality. You also need to spend money on the proper amps to drive headphones this expensive to get the maximum value. For someone with the budget it is worth the price, for must of us though a quality $100-$200 pair of headphones is all we need and are going to deliver music and games just fine.

This has been one of my big concerns after the buy out. Good enough reason to stay away from their high end offerings.

I have had the HD 800S for a few years now, paired them with the Woo Audio WA8 amplifier/DAC.

For movies, orchestra, acoustic, vocals, these are hard to beat. May not be the best for rock or hip hop, but for audiophile stuff, and orchestra again, none compare.

Exceptional for gaming and movies as well. Although I don't use them for gaming as I don't want to put in that many hours and wear out the tubes in the amp and the earpads/head band of the headphone.

This is as low as the HD800s goes so good price but I suggest trying these before making the plunge, the lack of bass is really apparent compared to other headphones in the price range. Huge stage and very detailed though. Generally considered the best gaming headphone or at least one of the best.

When I don't use this link and go straight to Adorama's website and look up these exact same headphones, they show up as $1399, not $1199. Can I ask how or where you found this link or if there is a code used to get the price cheaper?
It's a sponsored deal but anyone can add '?emailprice=t' to the URL for the cheaper price on all Adorama stuff.
