Biggest drawback being a TN screen. Would recommend an IPS being one of the highest priorities when buying a laptop. Unless you don't care about the screen looking bad..such as always using it with an external monitor.
People complaining about screens in $250 i3 laptops should be beaten... just sayin...
You need to be realistic pal. Bad IPS not better than good TN.
When buying a laptop it is the cpu, ram, storage, weight usb, nic always the top priority not the panel, probably never the panel. You get the best IPS panel out there but junk spec., what's that good for?

If $250 is all you can afford then I agree to a certain extent. However, it's like a $25 increase and it makes the biggest quality improvement you can get.

I'd also argue the same for the following cases:

A $250 laptop:

With 4GB of soldered RAM (non upgradable).
Or
Without a touchpad.
Or
Without wifi capability.
Or
dual core or less.

20 years ago? Sure. Now, no. In 2022 all of those should be banned, including the TN screen. In all cases you'll be annoyed with the laptop and upset with yourself for not doing a bit more research.

It's similar to saying expecting a screen at all for $250 is ridiculous.

I got the Target version of this last year, same specs but next size down screen with a roughly 250 nits low color range decent IPS for I think a little less. It was Windows 10, and I haven't upgraded. The processor/memory installed is fine for most business apps (the 4-core i3 is a zippy little critter), and the SSD drive was satisfactory. Upping the memory to 32gb and a SK Hynix Gold 1TB P31 is really nice. I haven't tried video editing on it, though.

The only think I didn't like (I'm a touch typist so backlit keyboard isn't as critical for me) is the coating on the screen makes me nervous when cleaning it. I've also not been trying multiple hi-res displays/refresh rates, either. Obviously this is not meant for serious gaming.

you're getting dogged but i agree on the ips panel. especially considering you can get that at this price point. sure it'd probably be a walmart gateway but still. idk when's the last time any of you used a cheap tn vs a cheap ips but the limited viewing angles on a tn get annoying real quick.

I am grabbing two to replace two old laptops: HP i5-4210U CPU @ 1.70GHz and a DELL Inspiron 5555 A10-8700p.

I use an external monitor all the time, so I think I'll be so used to the TN display it likely won't make a difference to me.

Is this an improvement over what I currently have?

If a better sale comes along, I'll return these.

It's great as a remote desktop terminal or media player, which are my use cases. If I want speed, I remote into my xeon server.

I don't care much about the TN vs. IPS debate, but if it was 1366x768 that would be worth complaining about at this price point.

I know there have been some deals in the past couple weeks in that range. Maybe some are still active?

Just now typed "1125G4" into google to see if something with the same model of processor has a similar deal. A very similar HP looks to be $299 at Target. Purchased yesterday it would have been $285 using the target gift card deal...or still $285 if you have a red card.

https://www.target.com/p/hp-15-6-34-laptop-with-windows-home-in-s-mode-intel-core-i3-8gb-ram-memory-... [target.com]

At first glance,

Pros:
IPS screen
Backlit keyboard (IPS screen and backlit keyboard are two of the first things asked about on laptop deals).
In stock for shipping vs YMMV in-store only on the OP laptop.

Cons:
$35-50 more
AC wireless instead of AX/wifi6. I'd bet most won't notice the difference.

I am responding to the general criteria when looking for a computer comment made by ThatOneDood, not specifically about this particular laptop. A laptop is a computer with a screen, if computing power is way too low, the fundamental of a computer, and can't even play youtube video or browsing slickdeals, it does not have much use for general public regardless if the it got the top of the line IPS screen.
