The RAM is soldered in but 16GB is plenty for most people. At this price, you would only expect to get 4 or 8GB.

The SSD is an M.2 and is upgradeable but note that it is SATA, not NVME. In addition, there is a hatch on the bottom side that opens to a bay to add another SATA M.2 SSD.

This is a great deal with great specs, but I thought I'd provide my experience.

After about a year of use, the laptop won't wake up. The battery/charging light comes on, but the processor never wakes up. I cracked it open to see if something like soldering is off, but I don't see anything. This is a disposable price for a laptop, so it probably won't be worth it to fix.

I usually use my laptops for year, so after this experience, I'll probably be buying something from the dell outlet next time and use a credit card that doubles the warranty.

You might try to disconnect the main battery and plug it back again and see if after that it will boot up. It happened to mine once and after I did it have been working with no more issues.

This is a great deal, glad to see it back, but I wish they'd make the 15.6" version $300 again. I don't think I would ever buy a laptop without a number pad, it's just too crucial for any sort of work with an excel table and numbers/math

I'm in the middle of an RMA for a similar model I purchased in May. 'v','b','space','left arrow', and 'right arrow' keys have all stopped working. One of the phone troubleshooting steps required I do a system wipe and reinstall Windows before they would let me send it in for repair. Probably not worth the headache to purchase one of these, go with a more reliable brand.

Keep wanting to buy it each time it comes up, but I just can't allow myself as I don't really need all that RAM. Will wait for something else. Repped though.
A friend of mine got the Walmart deal for a Gateway laptop with 256GB HD and 8GB RAM for $200 a month ago. The first one was defective and got a replacement. Everything I heard for the replacement is it's working good for her purposes.

I bought one. Here is what I don't like about it. The trackpad is not as good as other laptop when it comes to two fingers scrolling. And then the battery life is not that great 4 ish hours. And then the weight of the laptop is on heavy side. Also the SD card slot can be troublesome to insert the micro SD. These are what I don't like so far. I am still keeping the laptop because it has been stable and snappy. For 280,. I am keeping it as my daily driver. 16 g of ram allows my running of VMware with decent response time. Let's see how long this machine can last. My previous hp laptop lasted me about 2 1/2 year. Pretty disappointed with the ho laptop. I rather take my chance with the gateway. Only wish it is as light as motile.

Still might be able to find these in store for $249. Preferably the black one, from what I've read, has less issues

This is not good for a heavy or even moderate use laptop. I have one and use it during occasional travel for light use and as a general back up computer. The right shift key is horrible as it's much too small and causes me real problems and the keyboard overall is a poor tactile feel. The speakers are incredibly tinny, like the cheapest Chinese tablet you can imagine.

It's a good deal for the price as long as you know the limitations, however. You are paying for what you get. On the plus side, the USB-c drives my 4k display at 60hz. The HDMI is 2.0. If you hook up the computer with a mouse and keyboard and use external speakers and an external display as normal use, it's far more tolerable. (The IPS is legit IPS but with tons of back-bleed.)

Definitely go higher tier if you need something "real."
Can you tell me if the USB C port supports : Charging and Video Out?

developers avoids this. FN keys can't be locked. You always need to do FN + F1~F12 keys. No bios option either.
