I guess I would say a soft pass or a coin flip considering the price.
The 12th generation truly has been a radical improvement, but I would want to qualify any broad statement suggesting to hold out for them considering the product that's actually in the market. The vast majority of discount 12th generation laptops are based upon designs with two i-series cores (and some multiple of Atom-based efficiency cores). These big.little CPUs should be more than powerful enough for most productivity workloads (and arguably more efficient than older designs). However, older four-core i-series CPUs like the i3-1125G4 in this deal are still purchases that I would consider "safe" investments for long-term productivity PC purchases. In fact, I'd suggest that most every four-core i-series design from the 8th generation forward (assuming proper discounting) remains a "safe" purchase for a Windows productivity PC vs. holding out for a 12th generation device.
Good luck!

The paradox for today's laptop shopper is that they typically make a 'specs' decision, but specs don't translate directly to predictable categories of delivered user experiences. Even the most intuitive experience category -- 'gamer' -- requires a shopper to wade through a dizzying array of possible 'specs'.
I look forward to the day that cloud vm/vd, connectivity & security are so robust, common & cheap that the laptop is merely an 'endpoint' device: and all I have to decide (and pay for) in a laptop are the input & output capabilities.

The other thing is NVMe drive 256GB is ok. But you really want a laptop that comes with 16GB of ram and a 512GB NVMe drive. You also want something better than very basic ancient Intel integrated graphics. The Xe stuff is based on the new Intel Graphics processing units in their discrete cards. Still integrated graphics but much more robust than the integrated graphics Intel has used in laptop for what seems like decades.

i3-1125 is 4 real cores and holds its own brilliantly.
I upgraded all 6 to 16GB RAM (bought 3x 16GB SODIMMs, 3 machines got 2x 8's, 3 machines got 1x 16GB)
I upgraded 2 from 256GB to 1024GB NVMe from TeamGroup, another to 512GB using a random Samsung OEM drive I had laying around.
Thoughts on this:
- amazing that units with this chip are holding at this price a year later. 11th gen is holding the value category strong, as it should.
- these are challenging cases to take apart for upgrades. not for the faint of heart or inexperienced.
- even the slightest misstep in disassembly can result in a ruined rubber bottom or case damage
- the speakers are weak
- the chassis is soft and flexible
- these machines are an absurd value for the money. Hell of a computer for a few bucks. No USB-C charging or video, but its $300.
If you can use Amazon: Option1 [amazon.com]; Option2 [amazon.com]
Option2 is 16GB (2X8GB) matching sticks if you are particular about matching RAM sticks.
Stick to PC3200 CL22 sticks - assuming yours has PC3200 8GB stick in it already.
