Very easy. I bought one of these on November for same price. Shucked it and put in my windows machine for media for Plex. It is working great. It is a white label enterprise drive. Took the 4TB WD Blue drive I was replacing and put it in the enclosure and am using it. Everything working and everything easy. Plenty of videos on YouTube on how to shuck - make sure you find one where they don't tear up the enclosure opening it up if you want to reuse with an old drive. Good luck.

Tempting. You could put every movie in the universe on this thing and plug it into your PC/TV/Rpii whatever
Ha I do that now but have 5 3TB drives. They work but are 9 years old, you think I should get this just to be safe and transfer everything?

Someone told me once if something ain't broke don't fix it, is that true with HD's? I mean hardly any writing on them, just reading (streaming to TV)

Probably the wrong place for this question. How well would this work attached to a raspberry pi as a Plex server? Plan is to transfer files from pc to this drive attached to Pi wirelessly.
I'm running my plex server with 2 drives similar to this connected via usb to the back of my nvidia shield. It functions as the media player and the server.

It's worked well the last 5 years i've used it that way

I am using it that way and it works quite well. Pi is connected with wire network cable though.

If you're doing a JBOD or one big volume with no redundancy/raid.... then you could swap 5 drives for 1. But then you have single point of failure. I'd say if you're not out of space and it currently works.... run that sucker into the ground. It will take a LONG time to pay off the $200 in power savings. OTOH you could possibly sell those old drives for $25 each so could recoup some investment.... flip a coin

Ty

Was thinking the same thing about redundancy but tbh, there are only about 5 things I cannot live without, and could have those on a smaller drive I have here, a 1 TB

I would like to have them on one drive and you are correct, I think i could easily get 25-30 for each used drive on the bay

Can this be used as additional storage for a PS5?
I'm not sure if they changed it but the PS5 used to only support a max of 8TB. I use the 8TB WD Black external drive.

Can confirm. Bought two last year and have never shucked before, but it was pretty easy. Using them in my Synology DS920+ with no issues and going to grab a couple more.

Keep in mind that with the PS5, only PS4 games can be played directly from an external drive. You can store PS5 games on the external, but you have to copy them to the internal drive first before you can play them.

Just a suggestion - copy over to the new disk, retain the old disk as a backup. I've pretty much doing that for years.

Sure, but he was talking about consolidating 5 drives onto 1 of these.

You could easily get 80tb of movies and shows if you're saving full disc sizes with no encoding done. Blu-ray can be 25gb per movie and UHD can be 50gb or more. Frasier box set on blu-ray is like 1.2tb I think.

It'll work but whether it works well is the question. Any direct play should be fine. Transcoding will cause issues

Great deal, but how likely is it that there will be a better deal for these in the next 2 yrs? I'm willing to wait.

Is White Label good? I recently popped an 8TB White Label out of a MyBook. When I added it to my XPS desktop, it is not working and now may even be damaged. Later I googled and found out a "3.3V Pin issue" that is common to White Label WD drives.
