It's sad that Chase just copies the categories from Discover. I think that's the reason Discover stopped disclosing the categories for the entire year in advance.

I have both the cards and I hate to see overlapping categories. With overlapping categories, I always choose paying with Discover, because there is always a bonus when redeeming points for gift cards.
This is only for the freedom and freedom flex cards. Please update the description OP
Doesn't work for freedom unlimited. Only the Freedom Flex and Freedom get these offers Frown

I guess the person that gave you a thumbs down has a $200 a month premium Gold's gym membership.

The overlap with Discover in groceries is unfortunate. Plus, the Citi Custom Cash is my dedicated 5% grocery card anyway.

My Discover is going to go unused this coming quarter, and I'll use the Citi for dining instead.
Meh. I don't use any of these bonuses on genuine spending, meaning I'm usually using them to shift spending to capture a reward. IOW buying GC's to capture the 5% but actually spending those GC's elsewhere.

Man, I must be in the minority but I like this quarter. Whatever I don't spend for groceries, I buy gift cards for other stuff. Grocery gift cards to use throughout the year, Google play cards to pay for YoutubeTV, gas cards, or just Visa GCs to use on most everything else (effective 3.8-4% cash back after fees assuming you buy a $500 one).

Now I get most people don't like to lock their money into GCs, but it works for me.

So buying GCs at grocery store will always count toward that 5% for both Freedom and Discover? They won't ring up separately or get recognized by wither chase/discover as a diff purchase category?

It depends on the detail level of data that the merchant reports. The best thing to do is do a test purchase with a particular merchant/card combination. I've never had an issue with either Chase or Amex at Kroger stores.

Reminder to do the same for Discover card users.
Does Discover grocery discount cover Costco gas?

Edit: Never mind looks like that's this month. Missed out with my new Discover card Mad

It'll come back, it just falls under the "warehouse wholesale" category, not grocery. But remember, the freedom card is Mastercard and Costco is partnered with Visa anyways

My Freedom shows Visa Signature, so it must not be all of them

The original freedom card is a visa. Current users can keep the card, but it's no longer available for new applicants. It's being replaced by chase freedom flex, which is a master card.

why does chase ask to activate it ? why not just give cashback if purchase is eligible? who would not want the cashback?

Target card already give 5%.

Yes but I'd rather get the UR points and transfer to Hyatt for Hyatt hotel stay or redeem discover points for GC for 10-20% reduction ($100 gc for $80-90 worth of discover points)
