That is kind of confusing then as the listing specs state:

The listing title then says FastFormat, not sure if that is referring to a feature of the drive or if that is the name of the Recertifiying company:

Update: FastFormat is a featue Segate drives have.

And then they define Manufacturer recertified as:

Talked to their customer service chat and they said they are recertified indeed by Seagate and that ServerPartDeals runs their own internal tests on top of it. That these drives are warrantied to have less than 50 power on hours.

attached the screenshots below.

Be aware that this drive is apparently pretty loud, as discussed during a previous sale here: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...rpm_19999/

2-year ServerPartDeals warranty, NOT Manufacturer warrantied.

Side by side comparison of brand new Exo16 14TB vs the Recert one, the only thing that can't be seen here is that the recert one on the metal chasis on the side has the words recertified laser etch into it. The only other thing that stands out to me is that the recert are made in china, the other one is from Thailand. The recert has two clear logos saying is a recert, one right below the Seagate brand and the other on the bottom near all the other logos saying Factory Recert Seagate. Also the certifications are kind of different between each others as if this recert was meant to a different market? Main difference are the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) logo and the UKCA one. Not an expert on this so anyone with more info about the logos please clarify.

Quick google indicates that the UR one is for devices that are meant to be used inside another and not the final product themselves, ie the drive on the left came from an external drive and was shucked, thus the UR logo. The UKCA indicate that it is a product meant to be sold on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).

Interesting, I wondered what the "(backwards)RU" logo meant but never Googled it. But I don't think it's a drive that was shucked as you say, that label is the same as the OEM internal drives, which - as noted - are meant to be used inside another product (like a computer). I think that it's the white label you show on the right that's likely a shucked drive.

They are both "Underwriters Laboratory" logos, the "UL" is for a finished product and the "RU" is for something meant to be used insided something else:

Thanks for the info. I'm really not sure what the UR really means, ie I'm confused. One more data point is that the drive on the left is indeed a shucked drive, one tell tell is the sticky thing you see on the top left side. Seagate's internal drives have a metallic tape that goes from the SATA to USB board to the hard drive chasi and you can see evidence of that tape with that sticky stuff.

I bought a 18TB. Cannot go back to anything smaller in size. The 2-year warranty is from the seller.

2-year is OK. If I buy a WD EasyStore like I did several years ago, the warranty is also 2 years. No more. No less.

And, I have to shuck the hard drive. In addition, there's the 3.0v pin hustle. So,

It's called Hard Disk Sentinel.

So far my 14TB has passed all the SeaTools Tests only remaining the Long Generic Test. What I notice is that this drive is more quiet than the brand new 14TB Exo I got. The brand new one is one firmware version behind which is tempting me to upgrade it to the latest to see if the firmware has some secret sauce that makes them even more quiet.
Thanks for all your tests; if you try the firmware update for noise, I'd be interested to know how that turned out

just got a 14TB, drive was very well packed, inside of bubble wrap inside of a small box inside more bubble wrap in a bigger box. much better than the last drive i got from newegg which was in a bubble pouch with no bubbles on one side.

power on count is now 2, hours is 19. obviously used a tiny bit previously. now going to let it run tests for a bit.

I did the firmware update but didn't notice a big difference related to the noise really.

Built a TrueNAS Core system out of the 2 12TBs that I got from this deal. Price/value with no tax and free shipping, I would say is phenomenal... ofcourse, provided these drives run problem free for at least the next 5 years.

I went with TrueNAS Core instead of TrueNAS Scale because it is new and a few complained of speed/performance drops from going from Core to Scale. I really see the value of Scale in an Enterprise environment but not so much for a Home NAS.

My system config: i5 4460 on a Asrock H81 Pro BTC rev. 2.0 with 16 GB memory. Installed it on an old 32 GB SSD. No issues installing and configuring the TrueNAS Core, except the default root password wouldn't work ... had to reset the password and I was into the admin console. No need for monitor, keyboard or mouse... it is a network device now accessed over the network through an admin screen. Still exploring a lot of capabilities ... but suffices my need in terms of what I was looking for. Currently turning On/Off and don't want this to be conitnuosly running day/night. I can walk over turn ON, use it and shut it down. The 2 drives are in a mirrored configuration... so effectively, I have only 1 disk space for storage. You can add more same size disks here in a parity configuration to expand your storage.

Hope this helps someone. Still many drives are available even now but may not be at the same price it was at. I see some WD drives as well. Excellent packing and shipping from ServerPartDeals.

I received my 14TB drive today and like everyone else had commented, it arrived very well packaged. However my drive was DOA. My drive makes a mechanical beeping sound and it doesn't spin up. Obviously it doesn't show up in Disk Management. First time I've ever ordered from serverpartddeals. I decided to give them a shot based on comments from Slickdeals and the r/datahoarder community. I have sent them a message about swapping the drive. I will report back here with my experience dealing with them. And before anyone asks, I have tried using different SATA power and data cables and have also tried an external SATA enclosure.
Update on my situation, I was sent a prepaid label to send the drive back. I was sent another drive. This drive seems to be working without issue. I did however check crystaldiskinfo after putting a few TB of files on the drive and I have 8 uncorrectable sectors. Not sure whether this is a big deal as I read comments on reddit and online that say it's a sign your drive is about to die or it could be fine and last for years to come.

Yes RMA the drive now if you can. Some resellers you have to hit a certain level before they will replace it. Dell won't send you another until it is in the hundreds.

Sorry about your experience, being 0 for 2.
But thanks for sharing! I have been debating whether to give it a shot with "recertified' or not.

While I am not too worried about getting a defective drive (aside from the hassle of returning it and waiting for a replacement), my bigger concern is not knowing how much use the drive has had (given that the SMART Info, which includes Power On Hours, can easily be reset by the reseller).

Someone noted that their drive was from Sept. 2022, which is actually helpful info to get some idea,
That said, IF the drive was being written to 24/7 in a small business or other corporate environment before being 'recertified', that could still equate to a lot of data being written and read (lot of usage) over 120 odd days.

Too bad we do not know for sure how much use these drives have had... I would jump in if we had a good / better feel for the TRUE number of hours of usage.
