I have quite a number of these (and WD) that I use as externals/non-shucked, and while none have "died" on me, the Seagate's are by far the most finicky for some reason. On multiple computers, the drives regularly fall asleep while copying files. SeagateTools software fails to run (only an older version which doesn't have options to disable sleep will work) and on a hub I need to regularly swap USB ports to get it to recognize.

It does work, I haven't lost data, but these have been an absolute pain. I'd say it might just be me, but it's been on multiple computers
If you plan on shucking it, you can get the NAS version for $10 more with a 3 year warranty:

Only 1yr warranty? If you're looking to shuck these for a NAS, might as well get the enterprise recerts from waterpanther for $145 and get 2yrs warranty or 5yrs from goharddrive

It isn't NAS if shucked? Any chance there's an EXOs or Pro in here?

That's not an authorized reseller, so you aren't getting a warranty

If that isnt a red flag, dont know what is. I guess you dont have really important data on there as a non redundant backup. At the fitst sign of trouble like this, you must ensure redundancy for anything important.

Nothing important. Anything of value is backed up onto multiple other drives, these are convenient to have a large capacity on a single drive.

I have about 4-5 of the Seagate expansion drives and about 10 of the WD's, and all of the Seagate's are just finicky. Nothing has been lost, but it's a hassle writing or copying from them in large capacities at a time. I basically need to babysit it to make sure it happens.

Maybe it's because I run them connected to a (powered) USB hub, but the WD's all work fine and this has been the case on 3 different hubs

Have you tried using it as a router based attached storage?

No, if it was something I always wanted connected or wanted it feeding multiple devices I would -- I have about a dozen of the drives and just plug/unplug them (the AC plug) as needed.

It's convenient and the WD ones always work on plug in, but with the Seagate's about 1/3 of the time I need to plug it in and then play USB shuffle with the ports until it works.

The WD ones did give some trouble until installed WDUtilities to disable sleep. I hoped the SeagateTools one would do the same but it looks like a common issue where it doesn't work for people.

I'm guessing firmware.. there are hot swap bays to plug and pull drives from... i suppose this is the use case for you. Ive stopped investing so much
time on data arching because i have less free time. Hard drive solution seems more like data warehousing than archiving. It will take a while to fill 18 tb for me..to the point of needing to archive anything important.

With crypto crashing, and the recession looming, I bet drives fall further in price.
