One of the first things I do with a new USB/SD/microSD device is check the capacity and speeds with H2testw.

H2testw website [heise.de]

The site is german but there is an english option in the program.
Watch out and test for authenticity. Fakes from 3rd party sellers shipped by Amazon get put into the same inventory as Sold and Shipped by Amazon. This gets posted all the time in these threads by good samaritans. Thought I would take the lead this time. See 1-star reviews.
It depends on whether you want to do the footwork or get free software to check.

Hard way, but no software needed.
Step one, Re-format and check capacity shown. Some fakes trick the drive when they format it. And it would show correct capacity, etc after reformatting.
BUT you should not trust it 100%.

Step 2. Add enough larger files to it to see if they are able to be opened/readable afterward. For this 256GB capacity drive, if you add over 128GB and they read after, you are good as far as capacity goes because that is the next lowest possible real capacity for these. This way is some real work and takes some time though.

Easy way, but uses software . Some might not want to trust software, and I cannot blame them. So I would check reviews before installing any.

MUO is a site I subscribe to for tech tips. They offer some good advice and list several free software options to make it easy to test them. I would try some software out if I bought from Amazon. They are not selling or giving away anything they made. Just their top suggestions.

Good tip! Any pointers on telling the difference between real and fakes? Thanks.

If u know what the product is suppose to look like fake ones look 3d printed. But another trick they do is use like a lesser size (like 4gb ) and resize it to say 256gb. U can only figure that out via software. I learned hard way when my photos stopped copying at 4gb on a 128gb.. those mf costed me money and worst off time! Wasted a day 5-7 years ago scratching my head. Scums.

PNY and Premium shouldn't be used together in the same sentence, except in this post :-)

Where anywhere else in this post are those two terms used in the same sentence?

Well, not exactly premium but the product itself "Premier" signifies the same, which is in the title of the post

As you point out, this gets posted all the time, so people think it's true. It isn't. Sold and shipped by Amazon inventory IS NEVER MIXED with 3rd party inventory.

3rd party inventory is "comingled" with other 3rd party inventory ONLY, and its origin is still tracked so that Amazon can trace where counterfeit inventory comes from if people complain. The reason for the comingling is to ship the inventory closest to the consumer.
