NICRON N7 600 Lumens Tactical Flashlight

I bought one a couple of years ago when it was $10. I like it so much that I bought another one today. Small, light, no-nonsense, and practical. For everyday use, I prefer it to my Sofrin SP40.

Note that this flashlight takes an AA battery (250 lumens) or a lithium 14500 (600 lumens). Battery not included! A good lithium 14500 probably runs you $5-$10/each but it's difficult to buy just one. Also, the AA/14500 battery size isn't that big so this is more useful as a short task light (1-2 hours).

The Sofirn SP40 as OP mentioned can run 6+ hours on a more substantial 18650 rechargeable lithium battery (built-in charger). Currently on sale for $30 and comes with a good 18650 battery. IMO this is a better deal and better flashlight.

Wish more flashlight manufacturers made the operation modes on/off with press of switch. Can't stand cycling each time even if it's just 2 light levels before off.

This thing is never $29.99. CCC shows the seller just manipulates the price so they can say it's on sale. Normally $16.

Begs the question... does the battery need to be taken out to charge it?

(I bought a flashlight that has a magnetic charger and it is simply fantastic. So easy to just walk by and snap it in, so much so that I'm sure I use this light more than otherwise; it actually increases the utility of the item, let alone the value.

I would bet having to remove a battery, especially a "smaller" one would significantly decrease the utility.)

Sofirn has built-in USB-C, NICRON has to be removed. This is a huge selling point for me as well.

Oddly they're almost identical in size, which makes the Sofirn more attractive too, given the much higher battery capacity.

Sofirn is fixed at 90*, while the NICRON is not.

The biggest factor here on SD though is price, so if the few benefits of the sofirn are not worth $10-15 to you, NICRON is the winner.

The Sofirn SP40 is definitely the better light of the two on paper. More features (minus the rotating tip) and better accessories. It is comparable to the Nicron N9 more than to the N7. If I could own one only, I'd pick the SP40 or N9. However, it's not often that I need to use a flashlight for 6 hours or need to have 1000 plus lumens of light. Note also that the 1200 Lumens Turbo mode can only be used for a short time. When it overheats, it reverts to High, 450 Lumens, which is less than the 600 Lumens of the N7 on a 14500. I hardly ever use it in Turbo mode.
The Nicron N7 is 1/3 of the price of the SP40 and is more than adequate for everyday use around the house and more. As I said, I find myself reaching for the N7 more often than I reach for the SP40. I love the swivel head. I usually keep it in the car. The small factor makes it perfect for the occasional emergency. I actually used it for a 2 hr MTB ride tonight because I forgot my normal bike lights. That said, I would definitely not recommend it for that purpose (nor I would recommend the SP40 - the beam is too diffuse), but it saved my ride today.

Definitely not a $30 light!

The SP40 has a memory of the last mode used. It will turn on in that mode.

Is there a straight version of the rechargeable one. I have the one OP posted, it's actually a very solid flashlight, and has magnetic cap, and it's compact and bright enough, rotating head is very handy, but it's not super bright with AA batteries. It's definitely worth $10-$15 no more.

Looks good. I personally stick to torches that use 18650 batteries, so I don't need to keep several battery types around. Also like the capacity of that type.

it's been sale'ing and lightning deal'ing at this price since august.
there's probably too many in the channels, so i'd expect the price
