Other times on older homes you may need to tap into the main line outside the home before it branches off and put it into a garage or basement or whatever and then out from there.
I installed this same unit in my house off the shutoff at the end of the garage along with a pre and post filter in place. No issues so far in the 5 or so months I've had it.
Edit - a lot of the low reviews come from people not knowing what they were doing, I think I saw only one or two actual issue with the device itself.
I ended up getting a fleck unit off of Amazon/AFW after reading and a few youtube videos of being able to obtain replacement parts. This unit on Lowes or most units sold at big box stores are fine if you do not have very hard water. If youre on city, then you probably do not need a water softener. If you're looking at this for "city water" then you might as go with an all in one solution from the likes of aosmith or whirlpool.
I am on a well and my hardness is 200-400ppm and Iron 3ppm
If you do not know your hardness or iron, don't bother with a softener as you're going to need to re-bed the GAC (carbon, coconut shells and media) in no time if its high, or it will not remove the minerals(calcium) in the water.
The unit I got was from AFW (the pre-sales support was decent, after was meh)
1.5 cu ft Digital Filox 15 System Fleck 2510SXT for $1200
The local water guys wanted around $5000 to install the systems I put in for about $2000 including pipe, fittings, 100 ft drainage tube from depot. Took me less than 2 hours to replace the Softener and peroxide systems.

If you're able to replumb for this, those items mentioned should bypass the softener.

Nevertheless, R/O is the best system out there.
