It doesn't necessarily work with all decor, but I find that it's a way to get something placed on a wall when your desired mounting location is not in alignment with the location of the studs.
Now I haven't tried it with a TV mount, but I have used it to hang a fingerboard for rock climbing training, and there was no problem of it supporting my full weight (140 lbs) doing pull-ups, etc.
Just a thought.

Unless you have a television on the much heavier side, getting 2 screws into a stud and using 2 drywall anchors should be fine.
I meant lagbolts, but yes. One upper and lower into the stud will suffice. Would take a tremendous amount of force to pull those out.
