In 2003 I had been a TurboTax user for several years and it became known that that version of TT wrote to the boot sector of the hard disk for DRM, but TT didn't say anything about it and it actually rendered some computers unbootable after installation, not to mention they had no business at all in my boot sector. It was shady. I switched to Tax Cut and never looked back. Granted, 20 years is a long time to hold a grudge but Tax Cut hasn't given me a reason to reconsider, it works fine.

Prior to 2019 TT hid their free filing webpage from search engine results and steered eligible filers to their paid software, so honestly, they keep giving me reasons not to give them a second chance.

The best prices come mid february to late march not the holidays. Last two years I paid $15 for deluxe plus state.

Having used both, H&R Block is much easier to use, particularly the interview. If you like and use the interview method, H&R Block is the clear winner.

Regarding accuracy, for simpler returns either is probably fine. TT has known issues with form 1116 and does not complete it correctly, while Block does. For more complex returns, rentals, limited partnerships, and foreign taxes, Block is much better. In addition, Block has free audit support. TT is now owned by Intuit, so that is another reason to prefer Block to avoid Intuit's predatory practices.

Anyone have any opinions on this vs TurboTax?
Every year I wait for TT to drop their price, but they don't. Premium always $15 more expensive than H&R. That being said, TT user interface really holds you hand through the process. If you are a beginner, you should start out with TT. Once you are savy, you can get by with H&R but you MUST tread carefully and double and triple check your entries.
I don't know about others, but I had no issue with importing forms from TT to H&R. Heck, you can even upload W2 and interest forms. Remember to check all the autopolulated responses.

I switched a couple of years ago because the price was good. imported a lot of turbotax in to H&R.

now I am just trying to figure out what these different tiers get you.

no returns. and for anyone that uses turbotax and is thinking or changing. DONT. no matter what they say...you cannot bring in your turbotax return from last yr. i spent countless hours on it last year. ended up selling my copy on ebay to recoup some of what i paid. btw - i did try to use the software to do my tax return. its total crap compared to turbotax.
I tried both just to see if they calculated anything differently. They both were easy to use. Couldn't import between the two though, at the time.

You are wrong. Last year I successfully imported my previous TT return into HRBlock Deluxe plus state with no issues. Stop spreading false information. This software works just as well as overpriced TT and I have used both.

This may not be the lowest price before April 15 but it's darn close and I'm pulling the trigger on Premium so I can get started on my returns . It probably will be $10 cheaper at some point but it's not worth $10 to me to wait for that lower price. Typically tax software (and antivirus) goes on sale between Christmas and New Year's Day but that didn't happen this year so this deal is good enough to pull the trigger.
First time I have a 1099-NIC for a small amount for doing a job as an independent contractor. Do I need Premium or will Deluxe be okay?

Jumped on the deal when I got the Newegg hot deals email this morning. Slightly better price than the November/December Newegg deal price. May be slightly cheaper right before tax day when Newegg tends to drop one last deal day on this software.

For NY, I heard efile is free. So would one need to buy deluxe + state for NY or just deluxe is fine?

Thanks for adding your review and limitations of those who used TurboTax in prior years and trying to import prior year taxes.

Q: You stated you used both software for your tax return and were not happy with H&R Block, which is understandable as each software is different - the question I have - was there any difference in the final tax due or tax refund between the two software packages? If so, who far off was one over the other? Did you find out why there was a difference, if any?

TIA
If you use the online turbo tax. It's significantly much easier to navigate than hr software. But I never tried the hr online version, maybe it's better. But I have been using hr, apart from very bad interface, I still get my tax done. But I don't see why you want to switch. Not worth to save a few dollars

I've been using both back and forth and easily importing previous year's for over a decade now and they are both the same. You may like the layout, summary and navigation menus of one over the other but funcitioally they are the same.

Was there any difference in the calculations? Do you have a simple return or complex with lots of forms/deductions, etc???

I am not 100% on your question but I'll take a stab at a guess - my guess is that you would download the Deluxe + State (as that is how you install the State version) and basically, at the end, since NY does not allow for a tax prep company to charge anyone for e-file, you would just e-file though the software.

My state does not have the same free e-file protection that NY state has (who would've thunk NY State would be a leader in something!!) so I would have to pay extra, through the software, if I wanted to e-file. In past years, I've just printed the return at the end (for free) and sent it in for the cost of a stamp vs. $20 or so they wanted to e-file.

NOTE: As for Federal Tax Filing - there is NO charge to file Federal Tax returns using this software, UP TO 5x. So, you could effectively do 5 different tax returns and file for free on the Federal side. Your code, allows you 5 FREE Federal Files. If you only file one or two Federal Tax returns, considering coming back and providing your unused portions of your filing code to others to use. The Code is NOT associated with your tax return in any way, it's just a code used when submitting the tax return through H&R Block, on it's way to being filed with the IRS.

Did you import the PDF or the TT file ending with .tt extension? You need to import the file ending with .TT extension and not the print outs. I have done this few years ago. Its straight forward.

thanks - my question is if anyone have used 8936 and efiled instead of mailing it out and waiting for weeks for response.

Cos TT doesn't support efiling with 8936 it seems. so curious on the Block's capability or perhaps it was an IRS limitation?
