The 4080 is moderately faster, but the 6950 is pretty damn close (check the benchmarks [tomshardware.com] if you don't believe me). And for literally half the price, the 6950 is definitely the better buy.

Actually the new raytracing in unreal engine 5 runs as good or a little better on AMD.

To the institutions and corporations, consoles are king. High performance Ray tracing is coming to the new consoles through whatever black magic or encoding changes they need to make. And that means it's coming to AMD because the consoles are 100 percent AMD PC hardware.

In fact it's already here with unreal engine 5, it just needs to be further implemented and almost ever game studio is adopting it.

So sick of people commenting on ray tracing as if it's something that should determine the purchase of a card. Go look at gaming benchmarks from hardware unboxed, gamers nexxus, jayz2cents or any reputable tech site. RT tanks your FPS and still to this day isn't worth the performance hit especially if you game at 1440p and above.

i got the asrock 6800 xt in november for $480. There was a different brand from microcenter on this site yesterday i believe.
Prices went down on the 6800xt around black friday, but theyve come back up since then. For 95% of the country that dont live near a microcenter, a new 6800xt right now is realistically $550-580.

Anyone know of a good article or source showing electricity consumption of these top end GPUs?

Never Mind, found one on Tom's hardware.

This thing uses more electricity than a 3090 and runs like a 3070 Ti when Ray Tracing is enabled. If you use DLSS and Ray tracing, this thing gets murdered by a 3070 and above.

everyone keep mentioning raytracing raytracing raytracing. Just look at the majority of cards people have (steam hardware survey). raytracing isn't that big of a deal, most popular games are multiplayer games and guess what?

raytracing isn't going to matter for a game like that or while gaming at 144fps, as an example.

that being said DLSS is very good but still not a reason to buy a whole graphics card. currently the only dealbreaker is nvenc. its the way to go for capture cards since AMD does not offer a good enough solution for cap card owners.

so cap card aside, just buy what ever is best bang for the buck

That's not true, real time reflections from the Ray tracing do give a competitive advantage, when they can see you, but you can't see them.

The AMD website doesn't show how long this sale is good for. How long do these sales typically last? Are they trying to deplete their inventory, or will they continue to sell the 6950 XT, even though the 7000 series has come out?

If I had to guess... They are trying to move the old 6000 series particularly on the high end (6950xt) before Nvidia's lower end 4000 and their own 7700-7800 level cards start competing with some of these cards. The longer they wait to move them out the less they will get for them in addition to cannibalizing their own 7000 series cards. It will last till the inventory is gone would be my guess, however long that takes.

Nvidia has dedicated Ray Tracing cores AMD does not. Sure are they optimizing some of this stuff to work ok on consoles. Yes, but dedicated cores will always run better than not. This statement is misleading at best...
The Unreal Engine 5 ray tracing system is called Lumen, and it uses the CPU. Every other major engine will be forced to create a software based ray tracing system as well. Most likely, ray tracing will go the way of Nvidia Phys-X, and it will be a forgotten GPU feature within a couple generations.

It uses both and right in their document they admit that hardware ray tracing is better. https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.0...al-engine/

Lumen uses Software Ray Tracing through Signed Distance Fields by default, but can achieve higher quality on supporting video cards when Hardware Ray Tracing is enabled.

This seems a good deal. Given choice, I would take investing in good monitor with decent HDR at 1440 and at least 120 if not 144 Hz over a higher price card and ray tracing.
