I wouldn't buy a tplink router. Bought one from walmart a few months ago. because I didn't save the receipt, they won't let me register the product. So I can't get service for the product.

so the reason why you wouldn't buy a tplink router wasn't because of anything that tplink did wrong, it was because you forgot a receipt...? am i getting that right?

Any suggestions on router brands. The last TP-Link I owned failed after 2 years. I kept having to reboot it so my laptop would connect to wifi properly.

I'm staying away because I've just become a bit paranoid of Chinese software and hardware (together). So looking at Netgear as an alternative. Unsure about Asus. Asus tends to get the highest marks in reviews.

Asus is one of the better brands but your paying a premium for their stuff, the reason they got high marks is cause they were horrible till the government stepped in and forced them to improve or else get major fines.

Netgear would be the next step down or equivalent, they didnt have the problem with the government and out of the box their products seem to work fine. Biggest issue with Netgear is they tend to do a lot of updates which fix one feature but break another. Does not happen very often but it does happen, also their latest and greatest products can be unstable till their software gets patched over time so I would stay away from brand new products.

TP-Link overall is a good middle of the line, good feature sets, good hardware, good prices. Yes you are having issues with your current device, but Tp-Link has won a lot of consumer rewards and business rewards for their product lines, so they are not as bad as the some inexperienced make them sound to be.

DLINK works but is nothing to write home about, they dont really do anything well, most of their products are average in every respect.

Linksys is just a shell of their former glory since the name changed hands multiple times, their products never are worth the price tag, their routers always under perform compared to just about any brand. Currently my least favorite brand to buy from unless its switches their switches are rock solid.

The current router on sale here is a lower end basic router, but will work perfectly for homes under or around 1800 sq ft, and internet speeds around 500-600Mbps from your ISP. Anything faster than that from your ISP this will not take advantage of.

The reason is that they don't even support their own products. why would I need a receipt to register a product. They should know the serial numbers of all the products they produce so they should know that people are registering a valid product.

Don't trust TP-Link. I wouldn't be surprised that there is a backdoor.
