Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

I don't think they give out batteries for old laptops. amazon ebay for about $20
If you tell them your powercfg /batteryreport results they will give you a battery. If they have none in stock they will refund a portion. I emailed them and they did some checking over a couple of days and offered me $90 refund and a link for an $80 Dell part from another site.

I'm thinking about getting the higher capacity battery from Amazon (If your model takes it) for less but they claim I have to charge to full and discharge to only 5% and do it 3 times to "condition it".

Had 2 5300 2-in-1 with 16 GB pop up. i7 quad. B grade. Not happy about that, but I don't think I'll find better. Do these come with pretty clean installs so I can just jump them to 11 or do you have to reformat all the junkware out of it? What else should I look for/test for immediately out of the box (other than battery)?Got slightly better price with this one!

Edit: Not that I need to spend more money, but for a cheap, toss in the car system, I see some cheap No OS systems. Anyone ever bought one of these and seen if they'll activate 10/11? For a Xeon I doubt it has any activation tied to the hardware, but for a cheap little 'netbook' thing, I can't imagine it wasn't originally sold with Windows S.
I got the same one and came today. 5300 2-in-1 grade B. Came with fresh Win 10 install and asked if I wanted Windows 11 upgrade. Battery was like 95% health and laptop looked brand new. Also has original warranty on it until October 2023

I got one of those on sale a couple of weeks ago or so. Battery wasn't in great shape (I ran the terminal command suggested on that thread to find out). I emailed their customer service with my service tag number etc, and two days later they replied that a replacement battery had been ordered for me. Today I got another email with the tracking code. So, yes, if the battery is not in great shape (less than 80% capacity, according to their terms and conditions) they'll send you a replacement for free. I'm very happy with how things turned out: laptop was in great shape (probably just used at home during Covid, being that it was first sold in 2019), and now I get a new battery too. All of this for $210 + tax!
Can you post a pointer on how to test the battery? Thanks!

Install Linux Mint or some other distro to breathe life into your old machine. You will get regular security updates too.
Keep in mind Linux Mint's package system is relatively delayed (tested-and-tried) compared to Ubuntu. What made Mint a (relative) delight to use is Cinnamon GUI. I use Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix instead.

If you need low resource drain for old laptops, MX Linux is better.

It is sad how poor Firefox performance has become over the past year. On my desktop, even Edge is significantly better and seeks to have better compatibility. I frequently find web sites that Firefox just will not open but other browsers have no issues with. Used to love Firefox years ago, just garbage now. And 8th gen intels are still plenty good enough for basic needs and lighter games like Hearthstone.
Agreed. From my experience (dual-booting), firefox runs faster on linux but is relatively sluggish on Windows. Edge is the most responsive despite it's still derived from Chromium (that's used by Chrome/Brave). I suspect they changed the drawing system because I noticed when you zoom in with Edge, the pictures seems blurry (poorly interpolated). The zoom in Edge is pretty much like a magnifying glass tool on Windows.

Do you also experience the time changing when dual booting with Windows and Linux?

How so cheap? Dell Latitude 7490 Notebook, 14-in FHD (1920 x 1080), Webcam, 1x Intel Core i7 Quad (i7-8650U) 1.90 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, No Optical, Intel Integrated Graphics, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 Professional. Im getting this for $313.+tax
Mine is an i5 with 16 GB RAM. Not as fierce as yours but plenty for my purpose. And after scoping out the site for several weeks before pulling the trigger, their pricing seemed to float a bit from day to day - and not just due to differences in specs.

Dell Latitude 7390 Notebook, 13.3-in FHD Touch (1920 x 1080), Webcam, 1x Intel Core i7 Quad (i7-8650U) 1.90 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, No Optical, Intel Integrated Graphics, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 Professional
Nice!! Wanted the same but no more 512gb SSD. Only one I found was with 256/grade A but doesn't hit the $349 mark to apply the code aside of free shipping. Hopefully next time I can score lol

You meant the clock off by however many hours we are away from London or Greenwich Mean Time? Yup. It's a pain in the butt. Windows assume your computer's RTC is the local time and Linux assumes your computer's RTC is GMT+0. So the NTP client (clock server) on each OS wrestles for their interpretation of what RTC clock time is.

https://itsfoss.com/wrong-time-dual-boot/

I don't know how to make Windows do it the 'right' way (Linux's logic has good technical rationale. At my work, not tracking the timezones made a mess in our data collected across different time zones. If all computer clocks are standardized to GMT+0 and all zone specific times are just eye candies, there won't be chaos), but it's easier to make Linux stick to the more intuitive (Windows) way:
Code:
timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock

Yes, you have to pay return shipping and there's a 15% fee. And I don't know what it's like to even get approval to return. You definitely do not want to buy from here if you are just 'test driving' a laptop or want to send it back if you find a 'better deal'. Unless it's actually broken, you're stuck with it.

But we can easily do free returns with brand new ones?
