This thread is full of people not understanding what this tarp is designed for.

It's a ultralight tarp designed for backpacking where every oz matters. Please check any of the cottage company tarps on the market and let me know if any of them come close to the price/weight of this thing. $50 is a very good deal what it is.

To the guy who mentioned tyvek, yeah tyvek is great but also heavier. A similar 9.5'x9.5' sheet of tvek would be around 20oz vs the 12oz for the rei one. A pretty substantial difference in the world of UL backpacking.
I concur. One of the most popular ultralight tents of all time, the Durston Gear X-Mid 1P and 2P are made from the same poly material that does not wet out like silnylon does.

In for one as a sun/camp shelter shade and play around with some oragami to see what tarp only camping would be like. Might also turn it into a sunroof with some trekking poles for the inflatable boat I also bought Stick Out Tongue.

Tyvek. Just go on ebay, find a tyvek seller. Buy the 9ft by whatever feet you want for about $20
Quote from atros1 :
Incorrect, there are different types and ratings for tyvek. But at the common 0.22oz per sqft it would be 18oz vs 12oz for the 90sqft.

If 6 oz is a deal breaker for you, you're lazy.
0.22 x 90=19.8? What am I missing here?

Also you're talking about 6-8oz as if it's nothing when the type of people who are in the market for a tarp like this are willingly going with a tarp over a tent because of the weight savings. The same type of people who shave the handles off their toothbrush and dehydrate their toothpaste because it can save them a few grams lmao.

This tarp is lighter than Tyvec. Plus, it comes with a stuff sack, eight stakes, and six quick-attach guylines with tighteners. All the grommets are securely attached. It's a specialized item that comes with a rei warranty vs. just a piece of tarp. I'd rather pay for this specialized and ready-to-go item than sew crap to a piece of heavier material to save $30.

Cheap of you're trying to cut evey ounce (much cheaper to just go on a diet)
Expensive AF if you just need a blue tarp.

For the price it seems to be a great way to give tarp camping a try. I haven't used a tent in years and much prefer it. Without going for Cuben fiber or dyneema tarps, this seems like a good deal.

Most of this is true, I would really like to see someone set up a 9 foot square of tyvek 6 feet off the ground, let alone in the time it would take to set up this one. Well designed grommets are important. And ultralight is a niche product, some people care some don't.

The REI warranty isn't worth mentioning anymore though. They don't care what happens after the first year, really big drop from lifetime before.

Yes -- ultralight backpackers will spend a lot of money to save half a pound of weight and a few cubic inches of space over what a tarp weighs/takes up. It's not my thing, but having done some non-ultralight backpacking I understand the appeal. Get lost off-trail in rhododendron just once while carrying 40+lbs and you start imagining paying all kinds of amounts for light gear.

It's worse than that - you have to supply the poles. This is just a few stakes, some guy line, and a glorified tarp. These types of kits go for $20 - $30 on Amazon all day long.

Most backpackers that are considering an ultralight shelter solution will already have hiking poles they like.

Thought maybe this was made of silnylon but no, it's regular ripstop. Hard to believe this ever sold for $179.
It's REI. No price is too high to believe.

You're missing the point. The same is true for equivalent tarp kits selling for $20 to $30 on Amazon that also require the user to supply poles.

If this REI model were made of some exotic material like silnylon or had some other obvious distinguishing attribute justifying the sale price's $20-$30 premium (let alone the regular price's $140-$150 differential) then maybe there'd be an argument to get it. But none of us are seeing much to support that choice.

My son's scout troop does all sorts of different campouts. I have personally slepts under tyvek tarps, Walmart tarps, and ultralight camping tarps in various conditions, normally in the winter in rain/snow/wind. Any will work for a night but I will only hike into the backcountry with an ultralight. They have tie downs along the sides and center to allow various pitches depending on conditions. They are lighter and have reinforced seams that are less prone to ripping.

Anyone making a suggestion otherwise obviously has never tarp camped. In my years, I have only ever seen tyvek used as a footprint. Yes a few ounces do matter significantly. Most people try to keep their packs below 30 lbs. A few ounces savings in gear means a few ounces more water/food.

Lmao. You can stay that literally about everything that's listed on SD. $100-300 for a rice cooker? Use a pot! $300 for a pizza maker? Use some bricks! Man if this product doesn't apply to you. Then obviously it seems absurd. This tarp is good for ultralight backpackers. If you don't understand it then feel free to not comment at all. It's not for everybody. Tarp camping is for a very niche group of people with backpacks smaller than the size of a day pack traveling 2500 miles.
