I'm holding out hope there will be a sub $500-550 flight from LAX to Saigon this year.

I traveled through SGN and HAN (Hanoi airport) multiple times over a decade before COVID using both a Vietnamese and American passport and never got asked for money. I was aware of the anecdotes and actually was on the lookout for any custom officers to come "talk to me" but the only ones who did told me to please walk faster.
In my experience the service has gotten much more professional.
It's not getting ugly. It's a fact. You should know why it was renamed to hcm city.
Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it didn't happen to others. They normally look at the type of traveler first before asking for tips. Several years ago, I traveled alone with just one suitcase and didn't have any issue whatsoever. This time I was with my family and lots of luggage. Ideal target for them. Because they can use delay tactics to go through your luggage and cause you enough frustration to force you to pay.
Here's a tip for next time. Start recording them once they want to do anything with you. They won't bother with you.
US customs doesn't extort people for money coming in and make rules as they go along during the extortion process knowing most people are tired af from a 24hr+ flight

If you read my prior post, you'll see that I was merely replying to another commenter who complained about corrupt customs agents in VN asking for a "tip" or "coffee money" (the term they use over there). I concur that corrupt behavior is still going on today based on my personal experience last month, and also based on the experience of family and friends who recently traveled to VN. The difference is, since you asked, here in the US custom agents don't normally ask for "coffee money" as a condition to search your luggage.
what if you don't pay them? they are going to bring you in the back and beat the shit out of you? let me guess....bring a ton of electronic?
so you are not tired from flying 24hrs + back to the state? lol.... you are less tired of flying from the state to VN of the excitement of seeing your family.
Much to the contrary, US customs ships you to a "red" area and gives you free phones and SS 🙄
You are correct. You're not forced to pay anything. They ask for money, but you don't have to pay if you're willing to wait for them to take their sweet ass time searching your luggage. I'm sure they were filmed by some travelers in the past (videos posted on YouTube). I think those corrupt customs agents got smart now and put up a sign in their area that reads "No camera allowed." So now if you film them, they may use that as an excuse to give you even more headaches. Are they just bluffing or would they confiscate your camera if you start filming them? You seem to be an experienced traveler to VN. What do you think?
