I believe you can use those extra speaker connections for another room if that is something you need.
If I am not wrong , it is called speaker zone for another room speakers in the one receiver. I have another Yamama receiver support multiple zone

In many receivers, including Yamaha's Atmos receiver, you can decide to use all the speaker connections in an Atmos setup or use some in a zone 2 and not do Atmos.
