When you want to share your 5 e-files with a family member with a different OS, the only way to do it is with a Physical Key Card that is shipped to you. It works, but I kind of wish that the downloads allowed you to download Windows or Mac.

Is that just this year? Last year it was shared with me from someone who had a different OS than I did and I had no card sent to me. Worked perfectly.

My 2 cents: This is my second year using CashApp tax and it was a breeze and it covered every form I needed (bitcoin, mortgage, personal expense for work, etc) without paying a cent compared to CreditKarma (Turbotax) which wanted to charge me $99.

The only warning for California residents is CashApp is delaying the free state tax return because they need to update their forms as of 1/25/2023.

Can someone tell me if I own a small LLC with no employees and less than $1,000 in expenses for the year (mostly mileage) will I be able to get by with Premium?
Been successfully using "Premium" for many years to handle my no employee LLC. Don't listen to those claiming you need "Business" for an LLC.

We switched to H&R Block many years ago due to Intuit's poor business practices. First they left copy-protection software actively running on your PC even after uninstalling TurboTax and claimed it was intentional since other software might want to use it. With Quicken, they routinely change bank file formats simply to force you to upgrade Quicken even when it already does everything you need perfectly fine. I'd rather pay more once and have them leave me alone if it truly is a cost of doing business thing.

A caution for folks claiming the American Opportunity Credit - carefully follow your qualified college expenses through the H&R Block forms process. We luckily discovered, before filing, the software under credited us something like $1,500. We ended up having to go into the worksheets behind the forms and interview process to override the software.

Couldn't get anyone at H&R Block Support to acknowledge the bug. I have it clearly documented and the IRS accepted the return (and paid our refund). And of course I now have the IRS college tax credits instructions document practically memorized, questioning myself "is it me?" Haha.

Any online deals ?
As far as I know, just the discounts [hrblock.com] they're currently offering ($20-25). IIRC, the best deals happen now for very simple online filers, so those of use who have to wait for investment forms to be delivered in February usually end up paying more.

I've done the online option for the last two years and have been very happy with it, but it seems like the PC software gets much better discounts ($20 for Deluxe + State, $20 for one state e-file = $40 total), so I think I'm going to try this. According to their site, [hrblock.com] the software still allows you to have a pro double-check everything for an extra fee (it has barely paid for for itself for me both times). With the Deluxe online option, I like the idea everything is stored on their side for six years, but the chances of me getting audited are very slim since I'm a very normal filer, and it's not that big of a deal if the PC app doesn't do all the auto-fill stuff from last year's data.

As to folks holding off filing waiting for the mail, many financial and college institutions publish their 1099/1098's online pretty early.

And as others have said, the college FAFSA process uses your 1040's from two years prior, so no reason to wait for your 2022 1040 to be filed.

Key Point - so if you're managing your income downward to keep your financial assistance, you can breath easier once your students only have two more years left in school. Of course unless you're also managing income to preserve an ACA health insurance credit.

True, but it only takes one.

My three brokerage accounts and my mortgage have already made everything available online. However, the little company my employer uses for our ESPP has not published my 1099-B (even though they have published my 1099-DIV). Looks like they didn't issue until 2/09 last year, so I probably still have a couple weeks to wait.

Guess I can get everything else lined out and just add that form/info when it's available.

I don't like that you are forced to download their mobile app to signup and login. Makes no sense.

Please correct me if am wrong - For Washington state, need to file only federal returns and no state returns filing needed? With that in mind, the deluxe version is good enough?
