The only warning for California residents is CashApp is delaying the free state tax return because they need to update their forms as of 1/25/2023.

A caution for folks claiming the American Opportunity Credit - carefully follow your qualified college expenses through the H&R Block forms process. We luckily discovered, before filing, the software under credited us something like $1,500. We ended up having to go into the worksheets behind the forms and interview process to override the software.
Couldn't get anyone at H&R Block Support to acknowledge the bug. I have it clearly documented and the IRS accepted the return (and paid our refund). And of course I now have the IRS college tax credits instructions document practically memorized, questioning myself "is it me?" Haha.
I've done the online option for the last two years and have been very happy with it, but it seems like the PC software gets much better discounts ($20 for Deluxe + State, $20 for one state e-file = $40 total), so I think I'm going to try this. According to their site, [hrblock.com] the software still allows you to have a pro double-check everything for an extra fee (it has barely paid for for itself for me both times). With the Deluxe online option, I like the idea everything is stored on their side for six years, but the chances of me getting audited are very slim since I'm a very normal filer, and it's not that big of a deal if the PC app doesn't do all the auto-fill stuff from last year's data.

And as others have said, the college FAFSA process uses your 1040's from two years prior, so no reason to wait for your 2022 1040 to be filed.
Key Point - so if you're managing your income downward to keep your financial assistance, you can breath easier once your students only have two more years left in school. Of course unless you're also managing income to preserve an ACA health insurance credit.
My three brokerage accounts and my mortgage have already made everything available online. However, the little company my employer uses for our ESPP has not published my 1099-B (even though they have published my 1099-DIV). Looks like they didn't issue until 2/09 last year, so I probably still have a couple weeks to wait.
Guess I can get everything else lined out and just add that form/info when it's available.
