Update: Looks like sale extended Feb 5th - 11th [ In Store ]
_____________________________________________________
Update: Sale good thru Feb 4th, in store only. Staples website may show other pricing but this item does appear in their sales add for $279.99 and should be available in store at that price. Ask them to check stock in back of store, my store did not even have a display for this model but did have one in stock in back. Pg 10 of weekly add: https://www.staplesconnect.com/weeklyad
________________________________________________________
Update: After firing this laptop up this evening I really question if this is IPS (#%!*&!). Staples response in Q&A from the Staples team says it is IPS. But sure seems like TN screen (still nice overall for a budget build and the processor rocks).

I chatted with Asus 1/30/23, they call the screen "IPS-Level" 220nits. I believe the term ips-level is a marketing gimmick by Asus. Maybe a nicer TN but but not ips, color shifts a lot when viewing off angles.

Excellent budget build?

Staples $280 15.6" Laptop with IPS/TN [??] screen, excellent i3-1220P 12th gen processor, lighted keyboard, fingerprint reader, 180 degree lay flat hinge. On sale currently 44% off. In store only not for mail order. Non Touch screen.

The ram at 4GB it comes with (soldered to board) is anemic and upgrade a must! It does have one sodimm vacant ram slot for upgrading (via removing back cover).

Add crucial 8GB ram for $21 from amazon and you will have a Vivobook for $300: with IPS [??] screen, 12GB ram, a vastly superior I3-1220P processor, lighted keyboard & 256GB SSD. 180 degree screen, finger print reader.

Yes and no. It's a Xe core, but because the laptop is configured for single-channel RAM, per Intel's requirements the driver and stickers on the box must list it as a UHD. This is because the chip deactivates some (undisclosed) number of Xe cores when in a single-channel configuration.

If the laptop has a 2nd memory channel and you pop in the memory card, it will "activate" the disabled cores and show up as a "Xe" in Device Manager.
Just went over to Staples to pick one of these up. It's a nice laptop but the screen doesn't look like IPS. I compared it to an HP next to it and there was a clear difference in display quality. It looks more like the TN display on my HP that I'm trying to upgrade from. "IPS-Level" seems to me more like a marketing gimmick. Also, keep in mind that on the ASUS site it's not listed as IPS.
This 12th Gen i3 actually is superior to all previous gen quad core Intel processors per notebookcheck

Per what somebody put in the Q&A comments at staples: FHD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 aspect ratio, IPS-level Panel, LED Backlit, 60Hz refresh rate, 250nits, 45% NTSC color gamut, Anti-glare display, TÜV Rheinland-certified, Non-touch screen

CORRECTION 2/1/23. staples team chat comments are incorrect. Per actually scanning laptop with hardware program the following was identified:
Innolux 15.6" TN LCM 1920×1080 220nits WLED eDP 30pins CMN15F5 N156HGA-EA3

The I3-1220P cpu (12th gen) (10 core) (Q2 2022) shows to be better per what I find at Gadget VS comparison site.

If you decide to go for it, remember to check the graphic processors in the system menu. I saw one in store and it's actually using an UHD graphic processor instead of Iris Xe as claimed on their website. The display quality is horrible despite being an IPS panel.

I've got one of the Microcenter Dell Inspiron deals scheduled for pickup Saturday AM. Which would be better for my daughter (7th grader)? If I upgraded the memory (agree, it is a must), then for the same price...

The ASUS has more memory (12 vs 8 GB)
The ASUS has faster processory (i5 11th gen vs. i3 12th gen)
The ASUS has AX wireless vs. AC wireless (we can take advantage of that at home)
The ASUS has a backlit keyboard (she probably doesn't care, but...)
The ASUS has USB-C (she probably won't take advantage of it, but it helps with the future / resale value)
The Dell has a touch screen (although not sure she'd even use that)

Any feedback on which would be the better screen quality? More rugged/durable? I'm a big fan of ASUS network gear... but how are they with laptops? IF I could get one from a local Staples, should I walk on the Microcenter pickup and get this?

Also, is the deal over? I know it's an in-store only deal, but it's saying $499 when I do a lookup. Didn't know if it used to say $279 for other folks.

Thanks!
