I've used these cards in person several times in doctor's office, school, phone repair shop, etc. No problem at all, and I've never registered the cards. One place saw 'debit' on the card and tried to run it as Debit, which prompted for PIN, but I told them to cancel & re-run as credit. Payment was successful. I do wonder what will happen if they ask for billing zip code and I just give them my home zip, hasn't happened yet though.

I agree that the website to check balance is a pain to use. Gives 'technical error' about a third of the time, and you have to go through the captcha again.

I tried getting these late last year with Chase Ink Cash. It's theoretically a great idea for 5x points everywhere, but there's a lot of limitations and things that make it a PITA
  • You're capped to $200 per transaction, though PayPal will allow splitting onto 2 cards, which helps drain remaining funds on a card with only a few $ left. But it's still capped.
  • International transactions won't be processed, and you'll figure out quite quickly a number of vendors you hoped to use the cards on are international
  • Using them in person almost always requires activating them first as it'll prompt for PIN or other information
  • Activating or checking balance is a PITA since the website prompts for probably the dumbest captchas in existence and the website is quite slow at it too
  • Edit: also it's a hit/miss whether Staples has them in stock. I visited one place that was sold out, and before I left, another person came in also to buy the gift cards LMAO

Regarding your first comment, can you clarify "capped to $200 per transaction"? Are you referring solely to Paypal?

Regarding your third comment, VGCs (and MCGCs) are activated at the time of purchase at Staples B&M. Are you thinking of the cards sold on Staples.com?

Look closely at the package before buying. Keep your receipts and redeem them quickly. The fraudsters are getting better at tampering with the package and putting it back on the shelf, then draining the funds online after you load it.
They have put out new packaging that makes this more difficult to do. As far as how often this occurs, I'd say it is very very rare. With that said, it is always a good idea to use these quickly to avoid any potential issues and with the frequency they are offered, it doesnt make sense to stock up.

And most WM's will not allow them. We're far from the good old days.

1. Not really... perhaps on many online vendors. Also, its not a good idea to run a lot of these through paypal.
2. Who is actually using these internationally? I've never come across a vendor that rejected it for being international (used well into the hundreds of these cards).
3. No. These do not need to be activated. They occasionally need to be registered for the zip code to work but I have only seen that with local merchants and only for online use.
4. I agree the site to check balances is annoying and like another user mentioned, there is an error like 1/3 of the time.
5. This depends heavily on the location. Some keep them behind the counter and you have to ask for them. Other stores have users go to the store before a sale and hide them so they can buy them. One of my stores recently dropped the limit from 8 to 5 because a manager was upset they were wrong about what was stated in the ad so they said its their store policy since there have been issues activating more than 5 (BS).

Thanks for this info. This seems like a good deal as I just signed up for a Chase Ink card and will need some help to get the min spend. Should I goto my local store and ask them to hide them for me? lol

1. In the cases where you can't specify the amount to charge onto a card, and it would fail due to insufficient funds or similar. Usually online transactions for me, but in person rarely worked for me. $200 is since that's the amount on the card. You can get to $400 on PayPal since it's split onto two cards ofc.

3. No, I mean when it prompts you for a pin or zip or something. It happened a number of times when I tried paying in person, so I gave up. Seems like it works fine for other people though. Zip is set when you activate the card online and specify info like zip.

1. Yup, primarily online since it's hard coded to 1 card when checking out. Why not run through PayPal?

2. A number of vendors are in Canada. Like if I pay for Todoist subscription that turns out to be Canada. Zealios for keyboard switches is also in Canada. Interestingly a number of vendors aren't international I think, but still reject it. I recall Patreon or somewhere had that happen to me.

3. Sorry, meant "register for the zip code". I've had that block transactions for me sometimes so I went ahead and registered every card so I don't have to deal with that BS.

5. Exactly. First few times the card rack is empty and I simply asked for some, they pulled out stacks behind the counter. Last few times (incl the experience I mentioned) they simply didn't have any even behind counter. I recall the first time I tried they also tried to limit the # of cards, but I said it was supposed to be 8 and they relented, surprisingly

I was planning on using some of these to pay my insurance bill online. Then I noticed an 'installment fee' is charged for each payment under the full amount. My previous insurance company let me make as many credit card payments as I wanted with no fees. Doctors office and school also let me use multiple cards for a single bill, I had checked with them first but didn't think of checking with a major insurance company. I wish Staples had $400 cards with no fee.

It is slightly better than OD's 15 off 300 given the activation fee is now $7.95

But double check Chase Offer as I get Staples / OD offers from Chase from time to time

These do not require any activation to use in person.

I always wondered why people buy these cards except for a gift? These are a huge pain as you may end up having residue balance. Alternative is to check balance and spend accordingly. I got some $200 visa card from internet packages deal and could not find a convenient way to use them. Too many restrictions!

One way I use it is to pay for medical bills(which allows split payments), keep the receipt and claim through HSA. Residual balance can be easily used up by buy amazon gift cards on amazon.

My local car repair shop also allows split payments, if you have anything other than an oil change nowadays, it be easy to drain $800-1000 out of these cards

My insurance Allstates charge an installment for partial payment but the bill is adjusted to the full amount if you pay before the due date (so the installment fee is removed if the payment is paid in full in multiple installments as long as it is done before the origin due date)

All the supermarket I visited (Hmart, Shoprite, stop and shop, trader joe) will clear out the residue balance then ask for remaining due on the terminal, or you can clear it out but loading Amazon gift balance (as long as you have more than 0.5 in balance)
