LOL, but in all seriousness, this is a hell of a deal and more than $100 off. Home Depot selling 8 foot studs for $3.35 right now, and when you "spend" the Menards rebate, you don't pay sales tax on the part of the purchase made with rebate check. So in my mind, this is about $143 off of $343 worth of studs.
And in my experience, you should only have to check about 20 in the pile to find one even remotely straight!

True, but there aren't many building supply stores that do store credit "checks" that allow such a thing. I can't do this at Home Depot or Lowes, so I pay more taxes at those building supply stores than Menards. Buy $1000 worth of free after rebate hand sanitizer at Menards, pay zero tax up front, then buy whatever building supplies you need for your project tax-free. Worked for my last couple of year's worth of building projects at Menards.

What did you do with the hand sanitizer. Seems like a lot of work for $75 in tax savings.

Interesting inside knowledge. I don't think the builders putting up lots of houses are worried about the quality of the wood beyond it's ability to stay in place long enough to sell the house. It's quantity over quality.

All they are worried about is where the crown is. 2x4s are checked for tolerance before sold. Once behind gypsum board no one notices or cares. The corners need the straightest boards. That messes up cabinetry and flooring. A builder will fire a framer if the corners are too far out of square.

As an engineer, the title is throwing me off. Should be 2" x 4" x 8', not 2ft x 4ft x 8ft. If it was, it'll be the deal of the century. I knew what the OP meant, but it threw me off on first glance. Still a great deal and I could use some but no Menards near me.

Lumber demand has been down long enough now, we should be seeing some slide in prices back to "normal," no rebates necessary.

The title is correct. This is for a standard framing stud. At least in my construction world ' is feet, " is inches

What are you talking about? Standard is 2"x4" not 2'x4'. The guy you quoted is correct.

To be fair, the OP didn't make the mistake. SD Staff added the erroneous units.

Been a Long Long time since it was $2 a stick.. I was there today getting the free stuff and found out about the deal. I should have checked the pile for straight ones, but I was there with the Park Ave.. 100 sticks for $2 ea after rewards?!.. Time to build chicken coups..

Your must be pretty young to think 3-4 years ago (when they were in $2 range) was a long time ago.

It's disappointing that lumber prices went up 50-70% in a year and aren't coming back down. Even with plummeting lumber futures. The earnings these companies are making are breaking records, that's why.

Thanks! I never knew and never thought about it.

Sadly, I think i need 2x4x10 ft for basement though. The height to basement joist is about 8 ft and 10 inches from ground.

Knee wall...probably cheaper!

how would one transport a 8ft wood in a RAV4? i don't think the car is long enough even with the seats down.
Not the best method but open passenger window and feed it diagonally to the rear of driver's side. As long as it's not sticking out too far it's fine. Alternatively - do you have a roof rack? Buy a couple ratcheting tie downs while in store.

Playing devils advocate here. Lumber has tanked heavy in the last 6+ months. I have a sneaking suspicion that lumber like this is going to go much further down (around $2) a stud and menards knows that. They are gambling that people will buy higher and not use their rebates then buy at a lower price they dont know is coming.

2ft x 4ft x 8ft is a heck of a block of wood. I could buy a dozen or so, glue them together, and carve out a nice shed from it.

It's possible lumber will go down further, but the big box stores aren't interested in cutting prices and would rather pocket the extra savings, I am buying this deal because I have never had a problem with Menards rebates and always use them eventually so might as well get my cheap lumber now instead of hoping for a maybe in the future.
