I'd caution anyone looking to root their device that when you see a phone called 'unlocked' it frequently is referring to 'SIM unlocked' rather than 'bootloader unlockable' -- I cannot stress enough that these are *drastically* different things. It is the latter (bootloader unlockable) which allows for rooting to be achieved. The former (SIM unlocked) just allows you to use whichever carrier you choose right out of the gates without any hassle.

Notably, not nearly as many people root anymore, and the ability to unlock the bootloader is not something that matters if you're not planning to root.

To preface, I traded in my Pixel 5 or a Pixel 7 Pro a little before Christmas. I haven't experienced the camera glass shattering, but I've read a lot about it. It has nothing to do with how the user handles the device. It's a design flaw related to the difference in thermal expansion between the metal camera bar and the camera glass. It only affects people who have used their phones for extended periods of time in extreme cold weather.

Google at first gave users push back when trying to get warranty repair or replacement, but has now recognized that it is not the user's fault and is quick to rectify the issue.

Not trying to be rude, but someone would have to go through literally the exact same process you would to obtain that information, so why not just go check the value yourself on best buy website?

Bought a phone yesterday from bestbuy with Google Fi$20 plan just to get the cheaper price (not sure how Google Fi works but I wasn't charged $20 at checkout and never activated the plan) and the phone is working fine on T-Mobile.

In the same boats.
S22 ultra to Pixel 7.. and now back to S22 ultra.
My biggest disappointment was the fingerprint scanner with banking app. Rarely works and then the app forces to use password
I have a s22 ultra and keep thinking about getting a pixel. Nice to see your comment. I think I'll just get the s23 ultra since it was an okay deal for pre order with more storage space

Any brand new phones sold as unlocked with no brand/carrier tied to the hardware means you should be fine. In this case, the unlocked version is not simply carrier unlocked. It is fully unlocked and not tied to any carrier nor locked bootloader from the start.

In general, you do need to be aware and cautious about the different situations of carrier-unlocked, branded phones vs completely unlocked versions of phones. e.g. a Verizon model of this phone that ends up getting unlocked after meeting the requirements set up by Verizon would still have a locked bootloader. But buying this in the unlocked version, that you decide to put on Verizon's network could be switched any time to any network and the bootloader could be unlocked.

Honest question for those of you with the broken phones. Do you guys use cases? Good ones? Like the hard TPU cases that are thin but still offer excellent drop protection? I have a Pixel 2XL that I beat the absolute crap out of, have dropped countless times, constantly throw around (literally) and still I've not had it break. It's not luck, it's the case. It's mind boggling to me that some walk around with hard plastic cases, cases that expose the screen edges or corners of the phone, and so on.

That makes a lot more sense. Thank you for the explanation along with the comment regarding how Google is handling it. That's very reminiscent of how they handled the Nexus 6P battery drop situation (for anyone old enough to remember that whole debacle lol.)

I may still consider buying a P7P at some point, but with the angst seemingly building around this device, it feels as though a better deal at some point may be likely.

Point of order - the bootloader always comes locked even if it's unlockable; it's up to the user to unlock it, which will then allow them to gain root access if they so choose. I believe that's what you meant, but I just wanted to clarify because the language used to describe this stuff is pretty ambiguous as it is lol.

In any case your point is understood and makes sense. I believe I recall a non-carrier specific Pixel being sold on Amazon back a number of years ago, and its bootloader was permanently locked, surprisingly. That recollection is what drove my question, so again, thank you for clarifying.

On the checkout page there is a warning that carrier charges may apply.

"These are the charges that will be added to your T-Mobile bill, plus any applicable taxes, fees or surcharges."

There is no amount indicated. Any clue what this is about?
