No reason to buy this when TX-NR6050 can be had for $250 open-box on eBay. I got mine for $210(had a few small scratches on it) last week. Best bang for your buck out there. Supports 7.2 or 5.1.2.
Try shopgoodwill.com. Plenty of 5.1 receivers for less than $50 shipped. If you get one with an optical input, you can pipe audio from TV's optical output. I've paid an average of $30 shipped when I've purchased circa 00's built models. They'll probably last another 20 years and they used to be built solid with none of those HDMI quirks you sometimes get with modern receivers.
3.1.2

No side surrounds. For small rooms its doable if the speakers are positioned perfectly but given the fact a lot of sources are 5.1 only (making atmos useless) i wouldnt do atmos unless it is at least 5.1.2.

I have one of this. It is push my UF5 UB5 and UC5 surprising good. Excellent value if 5 channels are all you need.

It's 80 watts per channel in stereo. I'm guessing you are getting the 155 watts number for a single channel driven at maximum distortion. This thing is a piece of junk. You know it's bad if your modern receiver doesn't even have binding posts for its 5 channels. This thing would be terrible even if Onkyo was reliable.

I've had this receiver for a few years, its solid but a little quirky to setup. Highly recommend for this price.

Any recommendations for running just 2.0/2.1? Smaller/Less expensive the better - It'll be for a secondary setup with couple of bookshelves.

Looks like a quality, high-current receiver even for 2-channel. Now if it only supported network connection and Apple Airplay.

Are you counting zone channels as well?
Tehcnically the 6050 can only do 5.1.2 as the speaker config doesnt support rear surrounds if you enable atmos.

The 7100 can do 7.1.2.

Looks like the nr6050 is $330 and up for listings that aren't "parts only" this week on ebay
