I paid only one month of service, and let it sit in the box. It's automatically unlocked 180 days later.

Am I the only one terrified of going into a metro store. Have read so many horror stories of mangers making up their own rules (requiring insurance, buying cases, requiring 3 months of service)

I just checked with a Metro store, for porting they need the account #, phone #, and transfer PIN. But I think from the account # they would be able to tell if you're porting from Google Voice because according to this page for GV the account # is the same as the phone #:

Expect less refurbished for iPhone 12 and beyond because since iPhone 12 started require authentic apple parts third parties cannot repair them anymore

I used to work for Metropcs, They do this because the Company wants to meet a certain quota to upsale all these add-ons. Usually insurance not sure about the rest though.

This is exacerbated by the fact that Metro corporate stores were largely noexistent, few and far between when T-Mobile starting building them out, and have now largely disappeared again [tmonews.com].

Basically, there's a very low likelihood of you walking into a Metro store that isn't operated by some third-party. Unsurprisingly, this can produce some very bad customer experiences.

I recall when an area Metro store opened that was owned and operated by T-Mobile and the experience was comparable to that of any T-Mobile corporate store. In other words, it wasn't impossible to get some basic customer service unlike the sales-oriented mindset that dominates third party stores.

Good luck!
Jon

Oh I know, T-mobile stores are the same way. Even going back to 2014, I would go in for a simcard and somehow they would add insurance or some other add on to the account.

I found that this was rampant and managers were training their employees to do this, and t-mobile most likely was turning a blind eye

Aftermarket parts can still be used and third parties can still perform repairs, but Apple keeps making it more of a pain to do and non-Apple parts will show up as "not genuine". The repair places usually end up coming up with work-arounds for the functionality aspects, but the warnings of non-Apple parts will make them less desirable for sure. People aren't going to be lulled into thinking they got basically a brand new iPhone like some were in the past with the refurb deals. But yeah, end result will likely be way less of the refurb deals, as prices will rise while demand plummets. And a lot of repair places may not even want to mess with aftermarket repairs on them, given the extra hassle.

For a while, it looked like Apple was going to require repair shops to use the special Apple Service Toolkit, which would all but eliminate third-party repair, but they backtracked on that. Here's an article with a bit more info …

Porting in google fi does not work as it uses t-mobile. Currently trying unlocked google voice, but there is some issues with the service called bandwidth that google voice uses. Will update afterwards.

Will Boost work for this promo? It uses the T-Mobile and ATT networks. If it works there's a promo for new customers 50% off the first month (so $12.50) with free SIM and shipping.

Yes. They asked you to pay for tax on actual full price of the phone.
I visited a store and they were asking me to pay for:
Taxes, activation, first month and a QPay activation fee.
In other words, just trying to upswell something they themselves were not able to explain. They said it was because iPhones are different.
Just don't expect honesty from these people
