Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

I think it indicates OOS.

One Samsung pro is the 2 OS upgrades and 4 years security updates vs Moto's 1 OS/ 2yrs.
The Moto is already Android 13 while the A23 is Android 12 I think plus with all the ROM hacks out there, does that really even matter.

Can you choose between 5G and 5GUC? My phone shows 5GUC and has slow data speeds. ATT is also slow where I live. Verizon is the fastest.
Now I know T-mobile home internet won't be a good option for me.

no i can't. it's automatic.

the only way i can get stable speed is to disable 5G and use LTE

You paid for the prepaid month of service, not the phone. It was free.

So, good luck with that.
I guess I will have to sell it on eBay or Facebook. I'll make $$ on it. T-Mobile's website says there is 5G coverage in my area. But it's not very good.
Make sure you guys shut off your wi-fi on your phone and Speedtest your 5G network before you pay $40 a month for lousy 5G speeds. It all depends on your location.
The good part is Metro is Prepaid, so you can exit anytime. Good Luck..

I received the phone but when I try to activate the button "Activate" is disabled.
Anyone knows how to resolve this?
This is what I just did now to activate my two phones I received today:
  • Visit https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/order-status
  • Enter your order number and zip code and click on the "Check status" button. You can find your order number on your order email.
  • On the next page, scroll down on the next screen and hit the "Activate" button.
Within a few seconds to a few minutes, you'll get a text from Metro about your start of service.

Received my phone today and just happened to find your instructions very useful. I unboxed it, inserted the SIM, and then went through the activation process.

The good news is that auto pay is set to off by default. I made a reminder to check for unlock status in 180 days so hopefully it'll be the final straw of this amazing deal.

I must be too far way from their tower or have obstructions, but their coverage map says I'm good.

With 5GUC I just got 11 down / 2 up
Turning off 5G, and with LTE 4 down / <2 up
pitiful speeds

Correction: Latest firmware as of today is...

MILANF_G_S2SDS32.21_85_3_2_subsidy_TMO_UNI_RSU_QCOM_regulatory_DEFAULT_cid50_CFC.xml

= Android 12, Build Date: Thu Jan 5 11:49:09 CST 2023

I'm not updating until the SIM unlock occurs for me to "play." Not going to lose my ability to root by taking it. In 6 months, 13 is likely to be available and I'll give the developers time to either confirm or update any changes needed to gain root.

Not that it matters to me as you put so elegantly Wink

For those frisky enough (and/or already SIM unlocked), root is available on XDA [xda-developers.com] should you decide to take the plunge.

You never received your phone. How did you know your phone number? Do they create one for you and then activate it? Has your card been charged?
The phone number was in the auto-activation notice e-mail.

Card was charged immediately, when they claimed it shipped. (never got past "label created")

I bought this in december, it's an amazing phone for $40. you have to wait 6months to unlock the sim to use on other carriers tho.
Do you need to have a plan for 6;months in order to get it unlocked?

No. The $40 is for the first months plan. It's NOT auto renewed, so just let it expire on its own. Just use wifi for the rest of the 6months

I've have those, but they don't seem to take into account land contours (my house is kinda in a gully) or other buildings/trees/obstructions

If I give the phone to another person on Metro or sell it after it had been activated can they use it with their Metro sim? Like does Metro lock the phone to the sim it came with originally? Can I switch between 2 Metro sims with the same Metro phone?
I like to know the same thing cuz I'm not planning on using it and would like to give it away to someone that already has Metro. And would like to keep it sealed I'd like to know if I could just give it to someone and they can put their MetroCard in there and it'll work fine I wouldn't have to activate it with my card?
