Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

Not a bad phone at $60 but the iphone 11 came out in September 2019. Too many big cons like it not having 5G (the year is 2023), only 64GB, 3110 mAh battery (who knows how many years the battery has diminished while sitting on the shelf for so long) and 6.1" screen vs 6.8" screen. I have the Pixel 6a with a 6.1" screen and I have to admit that I do miss the large screen. I feel like Metro has been selling the iPhone 11 deal for so long now. It is like 2 years with the iPhone 11 deal. If someone is just a huge fan of the apple interface and is a light user, it is a good deal though. Good for kids but I would take the Stylus 2022 5G over it.
the phone wasn't sitting on the shelf.

apple is still making these old phones fresh from the factory

I am not saying the metro iphone was sitting on the shelf for 4 years but I highly doubt the factories are pumping out lots of iphone 11nowadays because there is a huge demand for them. There is a reason why it is free with $60 plan. Demand is very little. It is 4G in 2023 and beyond?! They really need to clear it out (clearance sale) and end this iphone 11 design all together. Maybe it becomes the next SE line. Metro needs to ditch the iPhone 11 deal as it has been running way too long. Good for a very light Apple user and kids who want a cheap iPhone.

Can one continue to use 4G for another 1-2 years? I can't see it. 5G deployed worldwide in 2019. The year is 2023. 5G is really a must nowadays and the future.

I'm not gonna tout any specific discount vendor (SD rules?) but in my hunt I found and ordered a heavy-duty cheap case for this phone. PM me if you're still looking.

For me here in N California, the 5G on At&t and Verizon has been a big letdown. SLOW speeds that are much less than 4G/LTE. Friends comment they were expecting more, but not the case.

Just wanted to share my experience with unlocking the 2022 Moto G 5g stylus I bought from Metro. The phone did not automatically unlock after the 180 days so I called them, and they told me that the phone was not used on the activated SIM after 30 days and hence haven't met the criteria of 180 days. I bought the phone in Aug 2022 so my 180 days was up but they are being particular about the 180 days of using on the activated SIM.

Did you go into the Settings menu? Then to About this phone and to the Device Unlock tab? Did you click that? It should automatically unlock your phone without needing any help from customer service.

Yes, I tried that option multiple times, on multiple days before I called them. This is a good call out about this phone, customer service might ask you to look for the unlock app, but for this phone it is part of settings, and the app is not standalone and won't be visible like unlock app that you see on the Oneplus and nokia phones

LTE will be around for many more years.

Probably longer than Apple will release updates for the phone.

Some report it takes a few days past 180. How long has it been?

Real bummer for a lot of people if they don't unlock these. Nowhere in terms does it say it has to be active the whole time.

More specifically, what exact date did you activate the phone? Some months are 30 days and others are 31 days. We have to get an exact day count from activation.

What message are you getting when you try to unlock it?

Does it say "Unable to connect to host"?

If so, you need to try a different wifi.

Once you click unlock, there's another button called "permanent unlock"

I bought a Moto phone in July and a OnePlus in August and both unlocked. Both from Metro. Both only first month. Both SIMs stay in until unlocked and then removed.

Metro "needs"..lol. And with your many years in wireless sale/marketing I'm sure your opinion would be valuable to them..or not.
Facts are Apple supports their phones longer than any brand by far. I have a 6S that got another update last month and that from a phone released in 2015. Battery at 93% and built like a tank. I have a new SE2020 and a older Xr too and while I like android system a little better, these iPhones just keep rolling along. My experience with 5G is that it's not ready for prime time in many areas here in N California with dismal speeds.

I just went through the unlock procedure on my phone. Still locked for close to six months. But I read the terms. It does not require the device to be active on Metro for 180 days. It says that it requires 180 days for the phone to have been activated on Metro. It says the phone must be purchased through Metro.

Next question for the failure to unlock. Did he remove the original sim? Did he port out the original number with that device. Those could lead to problems. The original sim used to activate the phone needs to be in the phone when requesting a phone unlock.
