Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

$40 - no mention of hotspot data
$50 - lists 5GB of hotspot data
$60 - lists 20GB of hotspot data

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the $40 plan probably doesn't include any hotspot data. You literally have to go through this page when purchasing this phone.

Anyone else not getting service / was able to fix it?

Got the phone, put the sim in. No service. I activated through the email and have a phone number.

Messaged them but they needed a pin to access the account, which I can't get, as I have no service to the number. Prefer to not have to go to a physical location but it seems I may have to.

(Not really going to use the phone till unlock anyway, so is it possible it will still unlock if the service was activated but just not working on the phone?)

Sharing your phone's cellular data connection with PC whether by wifi hotspot or usb C tether would probably be restricted by Metro's plan. If you don't pony up for an extra $10/mo I think you'd be shut out either way. Once this phone is unlocked in 6 months you can switch to another cheaper plan that allows hotspot/tether. In the meantime, according to previous posts, the paid version of PDAnet+

http://pdanet.co/buy/

enables hotspot and probably usb c tether as well. Searching google it looks like there are versions of this that could be sideloaded for free, but the $7.95 is probably worth it. I'm pretty sure I paid for the app way back in the freedompop days, but have since lost the serial nbr.

edit: I mis-read your question. There is an option for Ethernet tethering (share phone's internet connection via ethernet) under Hotspot and tethering. So I would assume that it works, but not sure. If it does, is it both ways? Does the phone get ethernet speeds?
thanks for the info.

I purchased 3 these tether apps, easyteth , pdanet+ and forget another name.

easyteth has ipk for openwrt v19 but it didn't update anyone

pdanet+ windows driver slow than share over wifi

USBC ethernet tether is clean and no driver need , plug and play , it just change ttl=65 on router or pc. also it is cheaper than buy netgear M5/M6 Smilie

Thanks for the update..... Looking to do the same with my device, that is USB-to-Ethernet-to-Asus Router with custom script to change ttl. Can I ask which adapter you went with? Thx again!

I have been trying for the last two weeks and I keep getting the same message at the end of the order; it even places a hold in my credit card which goes away.
"Something went wrong
Sorry, your request cannot be completed at this time. For additional assistance, find a store near you"

Any known workaround? TIA

Edit: BTW, I already tried different browsers, different credit card, different area code for the new phone number, different email address

Try PayPal if available, or call your CC company?

I can try using PayPal; but I cannot call CC company because Metro's hold goes away, there is no debit.

Still wouldn't hurt to reach out to the CC company...... With their systems they can probably at the very minimum tell you if it is their side or Metro's declining the charge......

I am pretty sure it's Metro, so really no point to contact credit card company. My Chase card showed a charge then refund then both transactions disappeared. I got a notification from my Privacy card of a charge but seconds later the transaction was voided.

Thanks, I already called CC company and they said there is nothing in their end that is causing Metro not to process my order. I will try one last time after 12.00 Midnight PST and that's it.

Part of Metro's online checkout process is setting up an 8-digit PIN. That's probably the PIN they're requesting, for security reasons.

I bought this phone with the intention of unlocking it in 6 months to use on my existing T-Mobile line.

I have a unique grandfathered plan that I have zero interest in changing (unlimited calling, texting, and high speed *unthrothed* data + a few GB of tethering for a total of $50+taxes & fees), but I noticed that my data specifies 4G (not that 5G even existed when my plan was put into place).

Has anyone who used this - or any 5G - phone on a similar, older T-Mobile (non-Metro) plan that specified 4G data on your account under "plan" or "add-ons" had difficulty actually connecting to T-Mobile's *5G* network with those phones?
