Sure you can. Section 179 IRS code allows 100% writedown of computer purchases first year they do not discern between new, used, or refurbs. That being said I buy them for resale. I own a computer store that sells new and refurbished computers. We offer computers from $99 to $50,000 servers. We've been in business for 28 years. By the way my first intern job out of high school was for the IRS in Holtsville, NY. I've been writing code since the mid-70's. Finally opened my first store in 1995. For the record most of my business is B to B. Most love refurbs..everyone wants to cost cut..I deal to government, non-profits, schools, etc. Most consumer model in the lower price ranges are built like crud. These are professional workstations and/or buiness models used in banks, hospitals, the military..completely different build quality. On this model--to get new about $1500 per or if you have folks doing 2D cad or solidworks -- you can buy 5-6 of these. Dell also knows they are going to see them again at end of lease--built better. Precisions, Latitudes are built completely different then Inspiron and Vostro. Same at HP. Probook, Elitebook, Zbook vs. Pavilion. Lenovo Thinkpad vs. Ideapad.

Upvoted, and would buy one if I didn't already have one. This is a commercial quality portable workstation, and I plan to get another 10 years out of mine as a home office machine.
Also... These usually come in excellent shape. Dell tends to be quite conservative with the condition description in my experience.
Thank you for posting.

This has a 7th gen cpu, only a few are fully compatibile. Usually need an 8th gen cpu for upgrade to Windows 11. Here's the Microsoft CPU list for upgrade compatibility [microsoft.com]. The 7820HQ is on the "maybe" list. So again, I'd say this is worth a roll of the dice.
It fails the hardware test for cpu, but still can be done. I've tested it

I bet this will be slow as hell.
How slow is hell? Considering rumor has it Hell is very hot, electrons would be in an excited State--so slow as hell, would actually be very fast. I happen to be Jewish and we don't beleive in Hell. Slow is comparative --so slower than an i7-12700H -- yup...slow to do email, web, and office work...nope. Single threaded up to 3.9 Ghz and unlike some newer Intel i7's this is a true quad core and hyper threaded - -so 4/8. With the 32gb DDR4 and an SSD -- all but the most cpu intensive tasks will be just fine. The other overlooked item is it comes with Windows Professional (a $99 upgrade from Homefrom MS store). For those of us that are security conscious Home is a non-starter. I apologize for my hostile comments to those who jus tdon't understand the benefits of a professional model in build and component quality.

Here's what $230 get you in a new laptop from Walmart
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo...hbdg=L1600

I'll take this Precision over this model every day of the week and twice on Sunday. This is the epitome of SLOW.

So yes and no
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdo...1-2-to-2-0

It's 1.2 native and upgradeable but that doesn't get you past the cpu requirement and it won't pass that. It ridiculously arbitrary as I've seen machines pass htat Passmark cpu at under 1000 and the 7820HQ is over 7000.

I was using a 7-year-old 16GB RAM 4th-gen i7 machine until recently, and while it wasn't fast by today's standards, handling most business tasks wasn't a problem. By that experience, this Dell should be more than capable in many work settings. And the big thing is, as others have pointed out, buying an able and well-built refurb model at this kind price point frees up the cash flow for other things. Paying a lot for extra speed when it isn't necessary does not make good business sense.

Unfortunately there's no info on what kind of screen it has, and how large the battery capacity is.

I found a spec sheet online https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocume...-sheet.pdf. It could have the nicer IPS panel or the less color-accurate TN, and a 91 Wh battery or a smaller 72 Wh one.
OK, so I obviously can't guarantee that the configuration of every one of these laptops will be the same, but I just reviewed the configuration of the one being shipped to me and it does include the nicer IPS panel (only 300 nits though) and does come with the larger 91 Wh battery. Someone else asked about Thunderbolt 3 and it appears that my unit does indeed come with that port. The build date for my laptop is 9/29/2018 so it's just under 4.5 years old.

Nice. That's all terrific for $300. I should have jumped on this deal 😅

If you know... You know... These people are consumers. Precision laptops are for work and these specs are great. $300 is solid and you can beat these specs. The age is no issue because these will last years.
