From a supposedly T-Mobile employee on Reddit, here is the latest update (5/1/2023) on Autopay discount:

Source:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/...ange_date/

The new autopay changes requiring a debit card or bank account to receive the discount goes into effect on May 18th.

EDIT: May 18th is for new and existing customers just enrolling in autopay

May 20th customers enrolled in autopay without debit card/back account/T-Mobile money will receive text messages over the next several months depending on bill cycle. They will receive a text message 30 days before their autopay discount is removed. Then a 15 day reminder, and again 3 days before. So the date for existing customers enrolled in autopay will vary from account to account.

Most reloadable cards are eligible for the autopay discount while non-reloadable are not and cannot be used for autopay.

Will update this post with more information as I get it.

Is it really that much work to just open a new checking acct and deposit $300 in it and just use for this purpose? I have a dedicate checking acct for ebay. I'm going to use the same one for T-mobile. Just keep few hundreds there then no need to worry about hacking. $40 a month is not a small number for 1 year.

Link your bank account but still pay it with a credit card before auto pay comes out.

If that doesn't work, prepay the next 10 years before May. Lol.

So if hackers hit TMO again, they still have both, your bank account info AND your credit card info that you use to pay? Bad idea amigo

Why not open and online checking account with no minimum balance required like Capital 360 and use it to pay TMO or Verizon? Just don't have a lot of money in this checking account in case you get hacked?

I was using the Wells Fargo credit card autopay for the cellphone insurance. Are there debit cards with cellphone insurance coverage?

For those worrying about data breaches.
Simply setup a fee free checking account somewhere. Transfer in $100.
Then set it up to transfer funds automatically monthly from your primary account, to the new one, for the same monthly amount as your bill on tmobile.

Set the new checking account up on tmobile to qualify for the autopay discount.

It won't help those receiving cell phone protection or getting the cash back % your credit card offers. But I'd rather receive the autopay discount.

If there is a breach the most they would get you for is the $100 in the new account even if they did somehow manage to breach tmobile.

RIP cc cellphone protection benefit. Between citi costco cc dropping extended warranty and now this. I am not having a good start of the new year, not at all.

Wow I didn't even know that about Citi. Got that card specifically for that reason. Thanks, ugh

This was only on new plans right? We've had autopay for over a decade and never got an autopay discount...?

Or was everyone supposed to get this regardless of plan?
We have Select Choice which was originally FamilyTime NW type of plan

Correct, legacy plans do not have autopay discount.

Came here to see any comments about how paying the bill manually via cc before autopay date has worked or not in terms of retaining autopay discount.

I would rather pay the $5 per line to keep my cellphone protection insurance from Wells Fargo CC

I was thinking the same but once I thought about it more, I realized I have not used the credit card insurance in the year plus that I've had it. I'm probably better off saving the $25 per month. I opened a fee free checking account with my bank to only pay my T-Mobile bill. Nothing about this makes me happy but I have been unable to find any service that beats the price I have with T-Mo so here we are.
