I've been looking for a decent charcoal grill.. is this a good one for the price? Or should I just fork out enough for an acorn kamodo joe?

Two very different things. If you want to do long slow cooks the kamodo joe is great. So much better insulated. It can also get quite hot. I think they are a bit small though in terms of cooking area.

You can really do everything in a Weber Kettle though. Smoke, low and slow, fast and hot etc. There is also a very large aftermarket accessory ecosystem for it. The cast iron grates are amazing.

However with all the "needed" accessories you quickly add 100 here, another 100 there and you should have just gotten a more expensive grill that came with those.

If you're set on a kettle, then this is probably the one to get. This has the nice ash catch on it and the fold up grates to add more charcoal for when you smoke.

When the one I have needs to be replaced I probably wont get another. It's a pain to smoke on, a pain to clean and it's just overall messy. Maybe i'll explore the pellet options or a drum style grill. Plus I know I didn't pay 175 for it, these used to be cheap and simple. A no-brainer. At 175 it's not, and its absolutely not at 232.

Weber's cooking grates are no longer stainless steel. The get rusty very fast and fall apart. I have to buy a new one every year or so.

Same with the "One-Touch cleaning system". Unusable after a year due to rust.

I have a smoker (Trager), so I went ahead and purchased this with a 3 year warranty from Amazon. I have a tiny charcoal grill and this should be great.

I don't know about acorn kamodo joe, but I have been very satisfied with Weber grill, just did my first brisket with the snake method, and it turned out very well.

I have been grilling for a few years with the kettle, and it has been holding up very well. I am very happy with the purchase.

There's a non premium version at Lowe's for $135. I think they started making a cheaper version, kept the same price, then started charging a premium for the original quality one.. at least that's what I'm hoping.

The weber kettle is a great grill. As for the price: just a couple years ago, this would've been considered a lukewarm deal. Now thst msrp is $240, it's a solid deal.

I have this same weber and an akorn. They are very different grills.

The akorn is very well insulated, and can run forever on one load of charcoal. It's very well suited for low and slow cooking for this reason. Kamados also take a little longer to learn how to cook on.

The weber is 6 years old and still looks brand new once I clean it up (it's been kept covered). Akorns have known issues with longevity, which can largely be avoided if you can keep it dry. Still, I wouldn't expect it to last you 15 years like a weber kettle likely would.

If it were me, I'd probably start with a kettle if you've never had a charcoal grill.
