You should be able to request an unlock from AT&T directly without having to wait 60 days because the phone was paid in full

Device Unlock Eligibilty here https://www.att.com/support/artic...KM1262649/ [att.com]

Your device:
  • Is an AT&T phone or device and isn't active on another AT&T account.
  • Was paid in full when you bought it (not on an installment plan). You don't have to wait 60 days to unlock it.
  • Has a paid-off installment plan.
  • Paid through your monthly bill: Submit your unlock request at the start of your next bill period.
  • Paid off early: The wireless number assigned to the device must be active for at least 60 days. Wait 48 hours after you make your final payment to submit your unlock request. Learn how pay off your installment plan.
  • Doesn't have a past-due account balance. Make a payment to bring your account current. It will take 24 hours for your payment to post.
  • Hasn't been reported as lost, stolen, or involved with fraud.
  • Is an AT&T PREPAID phone that has had paid service for at least six months. Check your device for an unlock app and make sure it has the most recent version of the app. Don't see the app? Submit an unlock request online.
Option 3 can cost a little less if you port your number and don't pay for your current plan for 2 months. Off course it's not an option for those who are on a grandfathered plan.

I guess because this being an AT&T device, the updates are set to be performed through AT&T severs and the unlocking doesn't change that. But I don't have any direct experience with it. Hopefully others will enlighten us.
Once the phone is unlocked by AT&T, it's not difficult to flash the unlocked firmware using patched Odin if you're tech savvy. The hardware is identical for all variants.

Option 1 worked for me

I picked up my Fold 3 this morning from bestbuy. ATT variant.
Ordered online with the porting in option as it wouldn't let me order otherwise. Used a random boost mobile number I had and have no intention of porting in a number.
BB didn't ask for anything in store, just gave me the phone and i walked out.

Received att emails after pickup, created account, created ATT PIN, jotted down account number, and saw $60 plan but $0 due.

unboxed and booted with t-mobile sim card, asked for unlock code.

tried to unlock from my att portal, but denied.
tried to unlock using the request unlock website for non att members, but denied via email

Started a chat with att to cancel service and request unlock.
I mentioned having bad service reception in my area and wanted to cancel and wanted to unlock phone to use it for work which was a different provider.
They wanted me to reset the network, but i said not interested just want to cancel.

They also mentioned that i lose my port in number if i cancelled. which was wierd since i never actually ported in the number yet.

Eventually, they said, "Since the total due balance if $0.00 there will be no charges now. Your services with AT&T will be completely shut off."

Then i asked about the network unlock, which they said they sent directly to my phone. Didn't work even though she said it was unlocked on their system. Eventually they provided the unlock code which worked.

Now my fold 3 is cancelled with att service with 0 payments or fees and unlocked so i can use my Tmobile sim.

hope that helps some of ya.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Just to be clear - by porting in you actually didn't port your number. I don't have an extra number so if I use my real number I wouldn't want to have it moved.

Found the same Info.

But after reading through some old SD threads, here what I found out

1. There will be a *edit soft credit check to open a new line.

2.The Account can be closed right away, even before the first month's charges get posted.

3. Since the phone is being paid in full, an unlock request can be made right away.
I just tried to unlock on att website and it denied the request stating the number has to be activated for 60 days

I don't think you have a choice in porting it in. I gave the number on BestBuy website. When I picked up the phone, the number was already working on the new phone so it should have been automatically ported in.

That's what I was afraid of. The other poster said that his number didn't actually port in.

So that means we have to open the box and make sure the phone connects to the at&t network, guessing that's what needs to be done in order to get it unlocked.
Now I can confirmed that both devices are unlocked. Te second line was cancelled before opened the box. I can be able to ask the CSR to provide the code manually. So very happy to have these two nice phones for my father and father in law.

Chat representative didn't help me, he stated same thing about 60 days. Now he created a case, waiting for reply now which may take up to 7 days

I am heading to at&t store now

I think people on this thread are reading just fine. The problem is that people are also reporting that AT&T won't unlock even after explaining/showing them their own support page. We have yet to see anyone who has reported that unlocking just worked through the portal (as one would expect). The few people that were able to get unlocks needed to call in and argue with the CS reps.

But they were still able to get unlocks, not as if they are not entitled to it. The reps caved in because they know it is your right to unlock. Sometimes you jusf have to call, which I've done even in regular circumstances.
