Without actually playing the game, how would one know if a game is CPU or GPU-intensive? I play a variety of games from DOTA to Halo Infinite and I've read that CPU is for frame rate and GPU is for resolution. But then I hear some games are more taxing on one or the other.

Is there a general principle that certain types of games or certain publishers put out games that lean heavily on CPU or GPU? Or is it just random?
Strategy games (like an RTS) tend to be CPU-bound, especially for large and/or custom maps where there are a ton of units on the battlefield.

The higher the resolution, the more GPU-bound you are (which is why many professional review sites use 1080p resolution when reviewing CPUs). That's not to say the CPU is irrelevant when running high resolutions. You want to ensure your CPU isn't bottlenecking your GPU. Generally, if you have a super high-end card, you'll want to pair it with a high-end CPU (Ryzen 7 or Core i7).

Reading CPU/GPU reviews is a great way to glean info on which games are bound one way or another, and/or which games favor team red vs. green.

I see, that's good to know.

Is looking at recommended/minimum requirements for a game and seeing how many core processors they require and recommend a good way to judge this, as well? Some games require, for example, 2 but recommend 4 so you know it's more of a GPU-intensive game whereas some games might recommend 6 or 8 and so you'd then assume it's a CPU-heavy game?

I wouldn't worry too much about the CPU, just don't pair a 4090/7900XTX with an i3 and you'll be alright.

That used to be the case, but the 4090 can push so many frames at high resolution, and the complexity of game physics has gotten so deep, CPU bottlenecking is much more prevalent than it used to be at the high end.

I would take a close look at reviews on a given higher end GPU. Many good reviewers, like gamer's nexus, often mention CPU effects on frame rates.

Did you read my previous response?
