I went with the Kindle PaperWhite for $84.99 ($99.99- $15.00 courtesy Amazon gift card that I requested from Amazon Chat). The Signature Edition has the advantages of wireless charging, auto-light adjustment and 32 gb space. To me, the extra $40.00 is not worth it, unless you listen to audio books.

The kids version has no ads, comes with a case and a 2 year warranty. It is currently $10 more than than regular Paperwhite.

Any idea what this means?

"Kindle Kids is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience. However if you exit Amazon Kids using a passcode, sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lockscreen."

Do you have to enable ads to load non kids books?

For the Kindle Kids, user TenderDesk401 posted this last month, which I used.

"I purchase pw5 kids as gift and do not link to amazon account.
Then I connected wifi and logged in amazon account. When the kindle asked me to claim kids+ subscription, I pressed the power button for about 30 seconds until the kindle tree occurred and wait for it to restart.
Now it does not have ads, but on the amazon device management page, amazon says my device is still with special offer. I saw this method on Reddit, and it does work.
So I think if anyone purchases this device for non-kids use can try to force restart the device when kindle asks to claim kids+ subscription."

This worked for me too, except my device says special offers are turned off.

Correct. It's not for those of us who want the actual Kids' sub. I suspect you could reset the Kindle after the Kids' sub runs out and do the above, but I can't say for sure it will work then.

If you change your mind after doing the restart trick, there's an option in the menu to claim the Kids+ subscription. But doing so might enable ads if you exit kids mode, not sure.

Any restrictions on the Kids version? Can I load books from Libby?
I got the PW kids a week or so ago and I can load Libby books just fine. Just note that the book you want (1) has to be a book that's on overdrive/libby, (2) that your library can get it, (3) that your library got it, and (4) that libby has as an available format "Kindle" (it could be that the book can only be read in libby, or there's an epub format, etc., it has to explicitly say Kindle to be read in Kindle via Libby).

There are no ads even after exiting kids mode.

Regular kindle paperwhites are on sale too
Way better deal. No one needs 32GB. Hell, an 8GB would take you a new ebook every single day for SIX years to fill up without deleting a single one. Save your money and get regular paperwhite which is on sale too

The hardware is the exact same, the software is the exact same, it just comes with Kids mode enabled in the software and has a trial to their subscription. When you exit out of that mode, it's the same exact Kindle otherwise. So, yes, Libby/Overdrive books work same as any other Kindle.

I got one of these as a gift for Xmas and am very happy with it. I'd previously had a qi adaptor on my kindle which was held down with painters tape. I ain't classy but that was a little janky looking even for me. Having it built in and usbC is a nice improvement.
