You can certainly have your own preference, but I'd highly recommend the 515 over the 315, given it's only $50 more and there is a big advantage of having the taillight integrated. The 515 (for those that don't know) will flash based upon the approach of a vehicle. So, if you have a car coming from behind at 15 mph + faster than your speed, for ex, the RTL 515 will start a "frantic" high lumen flash that is better at getting the attention of approaching drivers.

The above said, I'd highly recommend the 515 over the 315, esp when you can get the 515 at $150.
It picks the cars up pretty far in advance, you'll use much more of the road with this. When it alerts you, you slide over
Same price at REI as well if you want the member dividend . Purchase this a few days ago and they were kind enough to price adjust

If you get or have this light, check out MyBikeTraffic.com. The additional data field can tell you the number of cars that pass you, and how fast each car was traveling while passing. You can also generate a map of the locations along your route where the cars passed you. Some might not find this useful, but I have found it beneficial in planning and sharing routes with others.

For those that use Strava when riding have you moved away from Strava to Garmin app or stay in Strava and use alerts?

Before I had a cycling computer I used Strava for my distance and speed. When I bought a Garmin Edge I linked that to my Strava account and use the Edge, the Edge pairs with a heart rate, speed, cadence, and power meter. The RTL is limited without some kind of cycling computer.

I think it's worth the slight extra effort and so do YT reviewers -- I want to use this for ten+ years. Either would be good to gain extra peace of mind (and minor opportunistic theft deterrence).
"minor opportunistic theft deterrence"
they're going to snatch the light. or break it.

Of course it is, dangerous! You might even end up using your own head!

Have any tried this in a busy city? Not sure how effective this would be living in NYC but open to feedback

If you're in NYC and biking in the bike lane...ever have those e mopeds haul ass by you on a bridge and almost eat the railing? It can save you from getting run over.

I bought one at a local Public Lands store and tried it on a short ride. This thing is insane. I had bad experience with handle bar mirrors -- wasted $30 on a pair of mirrors that broke within a month, and even when they worked, they were cumbersome and not any more helpful than just turning my head. But this device paired with the Edge Explore I got from a previous deal can detect cars way before I could see them, and works well enough when there is a small turn. It helps me to be always prepared for upcoming traffic. Even when I ride in dedicate bike lanes, it helps when there is a change in the line (e.g. when the lane ends). I do need to figure out how it works well with my saddle bag because there is not enough room on the seat post.

(Thanks to slickdeals, I purchased an Edge Explore, a GoPro HERO9 and this device. I can see that the accessories will be worth more than the bike itself😂)

I think there were a few options proposed in this thread regarding mounting it along with a saddle bag. I shared a Youtube video of one of the solutions and is the one I used. Costs about $23 with two different pieces from Amazon.
