He's saying if you go from an AC68U (802.11ac WiFi 5 that goes maybe 350 Mbps max on 5GHz or slower the farther away you are) to this AX86U Pro (not only faster CPU but also the newer 802.11ax WiFi 6) you'll see faster WiFi speeds on your newer devices like the iPhone 14 that support WiFi 6.

However, most stuff you do on your phone is perfectly fine at ~200 Mbps offered by WiFi 5. You can certainly do what you like, but for many users we're already at the diminishing returns stage. There are exceptions like large families with multiple 4K streams going while others transfer large files for work, etc., but for basic browsing and streaming you probably won't notice much difference. You might even consider reducing your internet speed to save money every month instead of increasing your hardware cost to meet the fast internet speed you've been upsold by your ISP. Again, people have different needs or forms of amusement, so not knocking the Gigabit+ crowd or those who just like maxing out their speeds for the fun of it.

I have 3 RT-AC68U. Waiting a little bit to replace them with one RT-AX86U PRO and one or two RT-AX86S. It is for 50+ devices. Decisions, decisions ...

The radio itself can handle well over 50 devices, but you'll be limited to range, hence expansion with mesh.

I am also on a single AC68U which covers 4800 sqft 2 story house magically, with 5G band I got 200Mb everywhere (with iphone 14 max). But my Xfinity is 800Mb. I am also debating whether to upgrade and which one to buy.

you won't be disappointed switching to AX's but its pricey compared to what you have and the gain may be minimal in real world scenario. Also I have had two Ax86U's go out hardware wise in 2 years, so I have a feeling these don't have the same longevity as the trusty ones you have had. in both failures the 2.4ghz radio was affected and I got replacements but was a process to go through.

This is a hot deal at $225 for the Pro. Well, for an expensive router anyway. Nothing is as hot as the T-Mobile conversion years ago, so it's all relative. However, this Pro is still slightly gimped because it doesn't have two 2.5 Gbps ports like the more expensive GT-AX6000 that has the same processor.

Don't forget to stack 5% Chase Freedom at Amazon if you have that card.

This is actually replacing my ac68 converted T-Mobile router. After MANY years of use, the router has been slowly wearing down, requiring weekly reboots (scheduled), but finally the last straw was when the WiFi connection would lose internet connectivity even though devices were connected. If I get half as much life out of this compared to the ac68, I'd be a happy camper

What makes a slight cpu upgrade give a 400mbps bump?

Also, you can come sort of close to this deal if you recycle some old network gear at BBY and take 15% off their $266 to get ~$226. Total Tech might get it for $250-15%=$212 but Total Tech membership is expensive and only useful for heavy BBY shoppers (which is kind of opposed to being slick dealer).

If you want a reliable and performant mesh network, TP-Link Omada APs are the way to go. Mesh obviously requires more gear no matter how you slice it. Compared to 2 of these, an Omada setup will last longer and give more bang for the buck
Glad you could look into the future and KNOW that one brand lasts longer then another.

AC can easily do 500-600 on a 2 stream client but you need to be fairly close to the router and not a lot of competition for spectrum. AX should double that but only if your client is AX capable obviously.

With Wifi 7 routers coming out, the 6 and 6e will be coming down in price, so now may not be the time to jump in.

But agreed, for the most part these internet connections are only getting used for speed tests.
