I'm not in the market for one, but for those on the fence who want RELIABLE speed ASAP, get this drive or a lower-capacity version of it. It starts off fast and stays fast, even if you're transferring 500GB at a time. My Samsung T7's speed isn't constant (it falls off sharply after a brief fast start), and most other drives do the same.

You don't have to take my word for it, look at the Sequential Steady State Write Workload images a little over halfway down the page at https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...d-review/2
The Sandisk Extreme v2 is that steady red line that can write at ~850MB/s forever. The Samsung T7 is that line that craps out about 50 seconds into a write transfer, and that's generous because in real life usage, with a non-empty drive (my T7 is about half-full), I've seen even worse T7 performance. The Crucial X8 does great until about 3 minutes into a transfer, after which it's dead last and slower than most modern hard drives!

The SanDisk also comes with built-in encryption software and rugged water resistance, which some of the other drives don't have.

If you can wait though, give it another 3-6 months because SSD prices will likely keep falling. https://www.tomshardware.com/news...ue-falling

Compare to this:
https://slickdeals.net/f/16549390-4tb-crucial-x8-portable-solid-state-drive-225-free-s-h

$250 now; I think it's been $225 more than once.

So if it's just an SSD inside of there like some m.2, how are they getting 10,000 plus out of it? Because it's USBC and there's a microcontroller? Why couldn't I just shuck this thing and put it into my motherboard directly in an x4 slot?

This one does seem to perform well. I purchased the 4TB crucial x8 and hit the wall transferring loads of data. I've been on the fence about just building a Nvme thunderbolt drive to avoid cache issues. The crucial formatted as exfat became corrupt and went into read only mode and required a format. I sent it back but am now deciding on getting this drive or holding off for a few months since it seems like these are all dropping like crazy in price.

I've had my 2TB SanDisk Extreme for more than half a year now, and I've abused the heck out of it, transferring more than 5500GB, and at times running it at ~99% full. I regretted buying every other portable SSD I have, and I'm sorry (but unsurprised) to hear about your Crucial X8 experiences.

I'd recommend it over buying a separate enclosure for an NVME drive, which would mean more parts that can fail. Plus probably lack of encryption software (you can also set it so that it remembers your computer so that automatically logs in, if you don't need encryption), and ruggedness/water resistance.

The 4TB Extreme Pro has had repeated crashing issues, there's a big thread on Reddit.
I have this model, it throttled down to 90MB/s once and was very hot to the touch.
Since then I only use it on my desktop right next to the case's top fan. No issues since then.

Most of these drives are proprietary. Unlike HDD's, they're not just a m.2 stick plugged into a microcontroller inside of an external case.

Would this be a good option for an older iMac 2017 ? I need a larger capacity external drive for my growing music files I use with Plex amp.

You need USB-C3.2 port to maximize its speed, but this one is generally a trustful disk. I use 2TB version with Mac mini.

I think the "Event horizon" is emerging...
Depends on which tech is applied but NVMe SSD price is dropping sharply.
Will sit out till $200ish BF deal.
