Home Depot doesn't sell 12v xtreme (Lowe's exclusive in retail b&m). Link goes to 20v kit.

Its a basic drill (DeWalt Model DCD771C2), it's not brushless but it has a 1/2 in chuck and 3 year warranty. It's funny how everyone trash talks brushed tools and/or 12V tools but once upon a time they were the standard! 20 years later, this model would fly circles around the stuff they had out back in the day. The brushless models are twice the price. This is a great deal for someone wanting to get into the DeWalt system, a 'professional homeowner' will never wear this thing out. Two batteries and a charger are a sweet deal. I bought a base model in the 18V system years ago and I feel like I never used it enough...lasted me a solid 5 years, I still have it and it worked just fine but I wanted the 20V DeWalt tools. I would buy this over anything from Walmart or Harbor Freight if you want an entry level drill. I would skip past Craftsman as well. If on the fence, pull the trigger on this drill, you won't regret it.

Brushed tools kill the batteries faster. I have and use the 12v impact for basic home stuff, but I frequently pull out the 20v for bigger construction stuff.

I agree, brushed will be just fine for 99.999% of DIYers

What's the Ah on the batteries you use for the tools you have? 1.3Ah is pretty low, I can see brushed tools draining that pretty fast...

I agree with the "most home owners will never fully utilize tools". I fall into that category and STILL find myself looking for 'the good stuff'....despite the fact that I regularly use my Gen 5x Ridgid stuff from 8+ years ago.

I will, however, disagree slightly with respect to this being a good deal to get into the platform. For a few bucks (okay, maybe ~$50), deals pop up including a brushless driver + drill (if you are willing to return a battery), or $100 more but you have a backup.

Of course, if you just need a drill, the above isn't very valuable.

As for Harbor Freight, don't write off Hercules just yet. Their latest round of drills and drivers is pretty impressive. In fact, it is matching up with the Milwaukee Gen 4, if you can believe that. Here's the video. I think these guys did a driver video vs. Milwaukee too. Not as many tools in the lineup, but impressive none the less. You are still going to pay 50% more for the brushless combo kit from HF than this DeWalt kit, but I think that investment is, to your point, setting you up with the "latest" tool(s), top performing that could last 10+ years vs. starting out with the 'top performers' of 10 years ago.

It's not just run time. Brushed reduces the number of cycles you can charge the battery.
