Get the SN770 instead. I don't trust Crucial. Both Crucial P2 and SN550 was found to bait and switch to QLC. WD apologized and offered exchange. Crucial said get lost.

Did they also so that with the P5? If not then why go to SN770 which is DRAMless?

Would this be good for the secondary SSD in my M15 R7 Alienware laptop?

Same price on Amazon as well.
It's $120 on amazon, but it has no heatsink.

Take heed of my experience with this same deal from BB three weeks ago. BB, Amazon and Newegg all had the drive at $122, but BB included the heatsink for free so I ordered from them. I ordered both on 3/21 (Tue). The heatsink was scheduled to be delivered on 3/23 (Thu) and the drive on 3/25 (Sat). That was fine because I was going to install them in my PS5 over the weekend anyway. Wednesday came and went and the heatsink was not delivered and then it went into limbo. I spoke to BB chat and they couldn't tell me where it was and when it was going to be delivered. The website changed to 4/5. They couldn't cancel the order because it was marked for delivery, The drive was delivered on time. I ended up buying a heatsink on Amazon and it was delivered for the weekend as well.

The heatsink was finally delivered on Saturday 4/7. Seventeen days after I ordered it. It's not even worth to return since it was "free". I doubt they'd refund me any money.

I suspect the heatsink went out of stock and they had to wait to it was replenished.
What was the point of this story? That some people are impatient? I don't get how this is a bad thing. Shipping since pandemic started is crazy.

Depending on the definition of "work".

Can it be used as boot drive? Doubtful. It says supporting ACHI mode only, not NVMe, so BIOS likely cannot read a NVMe drive.
It might worth doing some research on if its newer BIOS update adds NVMe support, as i believe this is a software issue.

Can it be used as non-boot drive? Should be so, as basically every OS nowadays has NVMe support.
Just wrong. First of all its is AHCI not achi and it has nothing to do with NVMe. The specs on his board appear to support m.2 SATA only and PCIe x2 only, sorry no NVMe support

The heatsink is actually a nice touch by including it w/ this SSD, and the reviews for it seem pretty decent.

I haven't kept up on NVMe tech and models. Does anybody have a link to a tier list for models? I've just been rocking a 1tb SN850 and a 2tb sx8200 pro for a couple years now. With all these crucial deals going on, makes me wonder about upgrading. I just got my 4090 FE a couple weeks ago and my 7800x3D should be here this week, If I can have a meaningful upgrade I will.

This tier list seems reasonably up to date: https://ssd.borecraft.com/SSD_Buying_Guide.pdf

That said, you're probably not going to see a meaningful upgrade to an SN850 for awhile (it's still one of the faster Gen 4s though the 850X is a bit faster), and going from an SX8200 Pro to a P5 Plus isn't enough of a jump to really be noticeable unless you have workloads that are super sensitive to storage speed. You'll probably have to wait till fast Gen 5 drives are available to realize any significant difference, and even then you very well might not notice it in day-to-day usage.

I just purchased a Mac Mini M1 and I am looking to expand my storage. Is this one of the better drives to do this? If so, what is a good enclosure for this drive to take advantage of this drive. If not, what would be a better drive to use? I am looking to purchase 2, I would like at least 4TBs of storage. Thanks in advance, for any help.

That's not right, either of you.

PCIe (speed), like PCIe x2, was the name they called NVME drives before calling it NVME was a thing. Check out the NVME SSDs they have on the supported list (like: SM951 MZ-HPV5120 and https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-S...XDV11?th=1 -- both clearly NVME -- https://download.gigabyte.com/Fil...c62b122bba) and realize those same SSDs work on any NVME-equipped (M2-equipped) PC on the planet.

This NVME SSD, M2 2280 form factor, will work fine in his PC. Sure, he might only get Gen2 speeds on it (hence the M2_10GB label on the motherboard) but it is still the recommended purchase (vs SATA SSD or SATA M2 or something even older).

The other clue: SATA M2 tops out at around 550MB/s; they wouldn't call that M2_10GB on the motherboard - and M2_10GB is exactly PCIe x2 in that generation of PCIe.

All that said, a PCIe NVME adapter to put it on a faster PCIe x8 or x16 slot, assuming you've a card that can do that, might give a little more top-end speed, if you care about benchmarks. Otherwise, you'd never notice the difference.

4TB is a lot.

I just spent $15 on a USBC enclosure for my MM2P. Works great. Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

From the Specs on the Best Buy website the max write speed is 5 GB/s and max read speed is 6.6 GB/s (5000 mb/s and 6600 mb/s is how it's stated). Is that correct? So the the 10 GB/s enclosure you recommend is right on. I'm just making sure I understand what I'm buying. I see that these enclosures go all the way to speeds of 40 GB/s for a much higher price. Thanks for the link, I was expecting to pay at least 2x that price. I do music, video, and graphic design so 4TB gives me space to grow for the next few years. I'll probably use my existing sata drives to store projects that I'm done working on. Maybe I will go with 2TB to start and add more if and when I need. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!!

You are confusing GB/s and gb/s. To use the same terms:

Your drive will do around 5000MB/s.

The USBC device I linked will do 1000MB/s.

I doubt you'd notice the difference, but you're welcomed to spend $150 for a TB4 or USB4 interface, which would probably bump real speeds from 800MB/s up to 2700-3200MB/s.

Again, I doubt you'd ever notice.

Thanks for the info.

I already have my videocard in there..and I think that is on the PCIex16 slot (I don't really know lol). So, I'd have to put the m.2 drive on the m.2 slot from Gen 2 like you say.

THANK you for the help. I think I've decided to take the risk and get it. Hopefully what you say is correct. And yes, I'm looking to make it my main boot drive.

I'd assume its faster than my Samsung Evo 850 SSD that I got back in 2015.

Would you happen to know at what specific speed it would run? Advertised at 6,600 read and 5,000 Write, but that is if it was x4 gen 4. As x2 Gen 2, what speed would I get?

Again, THANK YOU!!
