64GB is overkill for 99.99% of people.

"more memory" always has a greater effect on real system performance than "faster speed memory" or "tighter memory timings". This is a very good deal one of the few good deals here in weeks. This is top shelf memory never had a bad stick or stability issue with Vengeance LPX 3600. I bought same 64 GB kit two months ago for $169 and was happy then. Anyone who buys today is getting a great deal.

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but here goes... what happens if you try to put this in a machine that has a highest speed rating of 3200 MHz? Will it not work, work erratically, or just hit 3200 and nothing more? At $25 more for the 3200 I'd rather get this if it will actually work.

How do you figure more memory has a greater effect that faster? I'd rather, for my uses, have 32GB of faster RAM than 64GB RAM of slower. Not everyone needs 64GB RAM. In fact, most do not.

Recently, I did some comparison tests. Overclocking a 32GB memory to 4066MHz doesn't make a lot of difference. I would prefer 64GB at 3600MHz rather than 32GB at 4066MHz. Though I don't play games, just video scale up to 4K and PS photos.

Most do. Go to your task manger check how much is actual free memory there after using your system for a while. Be aware of the memory used as cache

No problem, - I've used up to around 20GB RAM in some more modern games, and never any more than that that I've noticed. It will heavily depend on what you're doing, but I'll take the additional gaming performance that faster RAM allows, as well as the higher frame-rate in those 1% and 0.1% lows.

This seems to be single rank vs. the dual rank G.Skill & Kingston Memory for $10-$18 more currently at Newegg. Any experiences anyone on comparison between all of these?

I did pay about $190 for these several months back - but back then the dual rank ones were well over or near $250. Also the question is have DRAMM prices have hit rock bottom yet??

LPX is a crap shoot, Corsair uses multiple vendors (Hynix, Micron, Samsung) for the dies so any given LPX set may not be QVL and mixing and matching sets of LPX can be problematic for memory timings if the dies are from different brands. It will always work, in my experience, but calling it top-shelf is misleading.

As to whether more or faster memory is better is also "it depends"

Windows will use all available memory for cache. Linux will use available memory for file system cache and you can also safely set swap size to zero i.e. never have a swapfile at all. That's a system speed boost regardless of the application.

I have never had a set of Corsair Vengeance LPX fail to run at XMP speeds & remain stable, on any motherboard I have ever put it on. And that's a lot more than can be said for G.Skill, Team, Mushkin and a lot of other brands. Your mileage may vary. No vendor will claim you can mix random sticks of their product from different production lots.

It's admirable to offer information about products you use and your experience with them but you shouldn't make broad claims from a limited set of data as that can be misleading. This kit of RAM isn't "top-shelf" because you don't know what dies you're getting until they arrive and run CPU-Z; if you end up with Nanya dies, they are crap for compatibility. If someone's system doesn't support XMP, and a ton of prebuilts do not, this will run at a JEDEC spec of 2133c15 which is demonstrably bad for Intel 12/13th gen and AMD Zen 2/3 and would be much worse than the 3200 kits that come stock with those systems. Top shelf kits have good JEDEC profiles and this just does not.

Just because an OS will cache system files in RAM, that doesn't mean all your applications access them and give better performance. I run 128GB in my system, but I know exactly why I needed it and purchased accordingly. A valid and indisputable reason for buying this kit is compatibility with air coolers or sandwich-layout ITX systems. If you need cooler compatibility and your mobo supports XMP and you know you need a lot of RAM and have NVMEs using HMB... then sure this is a good price for 2x32GB.

For MOST consumers, the same $120 that this memory costs would be better spent on a Gen 4 NVMe drive.
