That no more than 5 years old really hurts the deal potential.

Any working laptop (2-in-1, convertible, detachable, MacBook, iPad)

Complete with power cord

If the surface go is $500 at bestbuy, while $599 at Costco, it tells me that I am really only effectively getting $100 for my trade-in.

How do they know the laptop age ?
There's generally a manufactured date on the bottom of the laptop.

If there's not, they can still use the age of the CPU itself to determine how old it is.

If the laptop is rocking a 4th gen i5, then it's obviously older than 5 years. If it's rocking a 10th gen i3, that's less than 5 years.

Warranty. Type your serial number or built in Mac code to check how old it is

From the Help & Support section:

How can I check the age and CPU of my trade-in device?

1. Re-start your computer. When the initial splash screen appears, look for the BIOS or Setup Menu option and note which key you need to press to enter this menu. Re-start your computer once more and press the appropriate key to enter the BIOS. The date displayed in the menu will give you an approximation of the manufacture date.

2. Turn your laptop face down and look for a sticker listing the computer's serial number and other build information. The date of manufacture may be printed on this sticker. If not, make a note of the serial number and proceed to the next step.

3. Contact your laptop's manufacturer and provide your serial number. A look-up tool on the website or a customer service representative on the phone should be able to tell you when your laptop was manufactured.

Yes it is. They only put in the less than 5 years stipulation for a laugh

That's what they tell us, but they're jot going to go through all these steps for the thousands of laptops people will turn in.

I only see them being either overly generous or overly strict.

Why wouldn't they go through the devices? That's part of the initial check to decide whether accept or deny the trade in.
They didn't get hired just to sit around.

I am assuming matching model/serial number with the production date.
PS: Five year or newer based on the production date, not purchasing date.

Where does it say "production date" in the terms? There are companies like CDW that still sell new computers but much older models.

I don't like these types of trade in deals. It is supposed to encourage the recycling of older electronics but what ends up happening is people going out to buy cheap but brand new $200 laptops to net a $100 savings. These brand new laptops are taken off the market and who knows what is done with them (especially if they are cheap and not worth anything). This kind of program end up with more wasteful trash than it helps. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if they didn't have the 5 year rule.

How to get folks not to buy the item...
Make it super confusing regarding the qualifying trade in, so people just pass and move on.

are you saying I can purchase a beat up or brand new laptop that fits the criteria for $150. Buy a $799 Windows laptop. Get a $300 costco gift card. Return the $799 laptop. Use the $300 gift card on a laptop I actually want. And I would save $150 on a new laptop?
No I didn't say that. I am pretty sure if you return the Costco laptop, they will make you return the giftcard.
