No need to buy such an expensive watch just to track small children. Just buy an airtag and a watch bracelet airtag holder made for kids. They sell them on Amazon
Any particular model you recommend, seems like they have a bunch of options.
it is tough, they have lot many options and surely personal taste but with in this price range - forerunner 45, venu sq would be good to start. Ones you learn the functionalities, you can upgrade. I started with Vivoactive six years back and now using forerunner 245 music.
Will an SE 1 or 2 work as a standalone phone for a kid.
cell version
.
Not effectively. All Watches must be paired with a phone for setup and maintenance - they're not intended to be stand-alone devices, not even the Cell versions. I've also had issues with my (SE2) maintaining it's cell connection reliably across OS updates. It also becomes a GPS only outside of your home carrier's range - i.e. no data or cell service internationally (again, in my direct experience in Japan, Europe and the Caribbean with T-Mobile as the carrier and an international plan).
You might be able to call or text the watch, but replying is tedious. I've never tried to initiate a call from the watch, so I can't speak to that.
YMMV, but I would not count on a Watch as the sole communication device for a child.
EDIT: I'll add that the crystal is easily damaged and cannot be repaired. . Mine slipped out of my hand and fell 3' onto a tile floor and shattered at the corner. If you request a repair, they will provide you with a new or refurbed unit at street price for a new watch.

I just wanted to use this as an airtag for tracking my small children. Do u need the cellular version for that or will GPS version operate like an airtag?
You should get an apple watch with cellular for this. Airtag in backpack is inconsistent.
Often times the airtag location hasnt updated in 7-8 minutes and I have no clue where they are and before I know it they are already off the bus.
So I ordered one for via curbside pickup. (44mm, GPS Space Gray)
Anyone who uses curbside at Walmart much knows all about the how they substitute stuff all the time. You get the email for you to 'approve' the substituted item.
To my surprise it shows they evidently fulfilled my order with a cellular version instead. I have to say, that's one of the few times I've ever had their substitution policy work out to our advantage…

There have been so many Apple Watch "deals" listed lately. Wonder if they're dumping inventory in advance of a new release soon. There's so little difference between models the past few years, maybe Apple finally have something interesting coming out beyond a new watchband.
That would be nice… i'm still using a series 5 because I see no feature in the past few years to upgrade for
Other than a newer processor, they are identical. For $100 less.
That's not the point, Apple will stop supporting Gen 1 SE soon, like they do with all their products. Once that happens, no app support updates, no security updates, no software updates etc. Gen 2 SE still has a couple years of support left

You must be high. Even the Apple Watch 4 which is two years older than the SE 1st gen is getting WatchOS 10 coming in September
