Some days even the buckets at the box stores are dented so I can only imagine what will happen when one gets shipped from Amazon with a single air pack or a crumpled up piece of brown paper inside a cardboard box.

I'm torn between finally learning how to do this, and paying someone to repair all the damage prior to painting. I've got a ceiling crack, small holes, and 1 large ceiling hole, in addition to some poorly patched areas from previous owners.

Plus one to those that said add a small layer of water and wiping the sides. I always save the paper that's usually in the bucket and put the back on top when I'm done as well.
As my father always said, just slap the stuff, (He didn't say stuff), on and stop playing with it!
Need a good knife and a tray. Never, ever, ever, put mud back in the bucket. Throw away what you don't use in the tray.
for actual wall repairs/patches....once you figure out how to use setting compound, you'll never use the blue or green bucket garbage again.

we only use that rapid set now for wall repairs. just recently fixed up one of our rental bathrooms, we removed old wall paneling and it pulled off chunks of plaster (house was built in 50's). we mixed up some of that rapid set and filled everything smooth, even really deep holes this stuff fills and cures hard just fine. and the best part, is you can wet sponge sand it easily for a perfect finish if you're not good with tools yet
