Quick tip - just add a layer of water on top and then close it. When you're ready to use it next, you dump the excess water and mix the rest in

Besides that you might have a mildew issue. I've gotten in the habit of blending in some dish soap [handyworkshop.com] to get a better consistency - does that inhibit mildew?

In addition to floating some water on top, I'd also recommend wiping down the sides of the bucket a bit. The worst thing with mud is when bits of dry mud get mixed in. It will create streaks when you spread it with your knife. It's why I stop using the bag and box stuff unless I can use it all in a single session.

Amazon isn't the best place to buy bulk 5 gallon buckets of construction material. Perhaps Home Depot might be a better place to compare prices and containers. A quick search of their site says not much has changed since COVID....

Get ready for a box full of Sheetrock Mud when this finally makes it to your door.

Some days even the buckets at the box stores are dented so I can only imagine what will happen when one gets shipped from Amazon with a single air pack or a crumpled up piece of brown paper inside a cardboard box.

One fun one I have gotten was an S&S order which included a large bag of potato chips, 15 lb of rice and liquid laundry detergent. The chips lost that battle amongst other crushed boxes. I would think the system would have some logic that would instruct the picker to put the chips in a separate box with daintier products like vitamins and feminine hygiene products.

A bag of easy-sand is more convenient tor miscellaneous occasional patching. Keep the bag dry and it never goes bad. Mix up only as much needed and it's ready to recoat/sand/paint in way less time than premixed.

How likely is it for someone like me who has never repaired drywall to figure out how to do an acceptable job?

I'm torn between finally learning how to do this, and paying someone to repair all the damage prior to painting. I've got a ceiling crack, small holes, and 1 large ceiling hole, in addition to some poorly patched areas from previous owners.

It's an art. Cracks need to be taped, small holes no big unless they are nail pops. In that case dig out the nail and put a screw somewhat close, maybe an inch away. Don't break the paper by putting the screw too deep. Larger hole…depends on the size.

Plus one to those that said add a small layer of water and wiping the sides. I always save the paper that's usually in the bucket and put the back on top when I'm done as well.

As my father always said, just slap the stuff, (He didn't say stuff), on and stop playing with it!

Need a good knife and a tray. Never, ever, ever, put mud back in the bucket. Throw away what you don't use in the tray.
