To your actual question, no one seems to be interested in modding, the two main people that tried have abandoned their efforts due to the controllers having sinden tech but custom firmware (apparently).
I almost jumped on this deal when it was posted last week but have decided to just build my own.

Built a joystick last year and now I have the arcade bug
I bought a microcenter atari arcade dual stick with trackball thing.... I seriously thought it was keyboard sized based on the pics, nope it's huge. Had that 2 years and have only busted it out once... when wifey was out of town, to play missile command. Nostalgia is a powerful drug until reality sets in, and the work involved becomes apparent.
