Mid-tier machines like this and Breville Baristas offer a mediocre grinder built in. Mediocre grind limits your ability to pull shots with better mouthfeel and you may miss out on some flavor from inconsistent extraction. But grinders can get crazy expensive. As for the espresso part- temp control, temp stability, ability to preinfuse, dual boilers to heat the shot and steam at the same time are some of the things you'll get in higher end machines. A casual user may not need or want these things especially given the price (nicer machines are around $3000).
I think $500 is the sweet spot for getting into espresso machines and you could do much worse than this unit. I currently own a breville barista pro fwiw.
